when I say "Democratic Underground" almost all know when I say "my Democratic forum"
Another older term was message boards and BBS.. bulletin board system.
Way back was the Usenet newsgroups that the prefix was ALT.. LIke Alt sports cars, alt photography etc. That's where the "alt right" got its name from the old usenet format...

I never consider DU as "social media" but I suppose nowadays it might be lumped in
