USA TodayWhat's pretty clear if you undertake watching all 93 (so far) films to take that vaunted prize and it's not for the fainthearted, trust us is that you come out of it changed. You love movies a little bit more.
All of these films bear Hollywood's highest honor but how do they compare with one another? To celebrate Sunday's 94th Academy Awards ceremony (ABC, 8 EDT/5 PDT), we're ranking every best picture winner, from iffy stuff where a recount seems in order to the very best of the best.

(102,263 posts)Some of the most celebrated movies send me into yawns or eyerolls, while others that I always thought should be forever lauded seem to elicit the most vehement critiques, despite winning the big prize. Go figure. At least we aren't rating guitar players.

(5,790 posts)I don't agree with aspects of the USA Today list.
Some films just haven't aged well
Some films get slammed because critics feel another film should have won instead. This list doesn't state that in any particular instance, but film buffs will know them when they see them.
Some films that were groundbreaking in their time just don't seem that way now. That may be my biggest problem with this list. Films like "The Lost Weekend" and "Gentleman's Agreement" aren't recognized in the context of their time.
Similarly, some films were topical - "Best Years of Our Lives" leaps to mind.
I like most of their top 20, albeit in different order.

Some are unavailable to watch. And that list promotes much thought about movies. (some good, & some not so good)
