...oh, I've enjoyed the films. But as a life-long SF fan, I can't help wondering how the great American public would have reacted to seeing Dominic Flandry, or Dorsai, or Lazarus Long, or even the Lensmen--if done right. Since Dune, probably the most famous written SF series of all, has had mixed results on the screen, who can say... Having said that, I would have loved seeing Timothy Zahn's Thrawn books done up right. But Zahn was a veteran SF writer before he ever touched Star Wars...
