That guy has to know that's not a legal setup, right? I mean, he has to know that.
Did he tell the U-Haul folks what he had in mind?

(8,387 posts)3. I got into a weird argument with Canadian Customs one time...
A buddy of mine in Ontario bought a couch on eBay near me and paid for me to rent a U-Haul to take it up to him. He met me at the border to have the duty assessed, and the customs officer started asking me if my rental agreement allowed me to take the vehicle into Canada.
My rental agreement said I could drive it to anywhere in the United States, and specifically said not to take it into Mexico.
"But it doesn't say you can drive it into Canada," he said.
"Okay, but the last time I checked, Alaska was part of the United States, and I can't think of how anyone would drive there without driving it through Canada."
Aside from which, there are only two countries that have a land border with the US, but only one that the agreement says not to drive into.
Ultimately, though, I asked him, "So, is Canadian customs in the business of enforcing private rental agreements?" and that was the winner.
But, having closely read the standard U-Haul agreement a couple of times, whatever happens to that guy, he'd better not damage the truck in the process.

... never a very smooth operation during my 25 years of living in it, with my kid and all. I often had to leave it at half way after break downs, but always made it through to it's new home path.
