A fun professional soccer charity event in Portland.

I want to send a HUGE shout out to the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns professional soccer clubs. Tonight, the two teams merged to play a very friendly mixed gender charity game at Portland's Providence Park.

The game opened with a lovely rendition of the Ukrainian national anthem performed by a Ukrainian native. Blue and yellow flags were everywhere.

It got crazy near the end when both benches emptied, and it turned into a 20 on 20 free for all. At one point, Timbers midfielder Diego Chara helped his side by rolling an extra ball onto the pitch (earning a laugh and a yellow card). The Timbers coach borrowed a jersey and got an assist!

20,000 took advantage of the free tickets. The event raised over $430,000 for UNICEF Ukraine relief.

I too hope it inspires other cities with both men's and women's professional teams to lock arms for the cause.

Side story...The referee in the match was also Ukrainian.
