If you have time for an hour-long concert -- Golden Earring, live on the beach, 1993

This was a great concert, and I finally had a chance to watch all of it last night (with a break to check weather reports). The guys were in their mid-40s in 1993, but they were playing just as perfectly and with as much energy as ever. GE's founders, lead guitarist George Kooymans and bassist/keyboardist Rinus Gerritsen, had formed the first version of the band in 1961, with lead singer Barry Hay joining them several years later, and drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk joining in 1970 to complete the lineup they'd have for the next 51 years. In 1993 they weren't as theatrical as in their early days, with less dancing from Barry, no high leaps from George, and Cesar (who'd been an athlete when younger) no longer leaping over his drum kit. Still, a fantastic live performance for a huge crowd on the beach at Scheveningen, near The Hague.

This concert was on June 12 and was broadcast live in the Netherlands by Veronica TV, but it nearly didn't happen because of bad weather, which also ended plans for a rehearsal and sound check (the sound is great anyway). Fortunately the cold rain stopped about the time Golden Earring finally took the stage, at 9 that evening. This apparently is the complete broadcast, though it's missing the first songs of the acoustic set they began with (the broadcast was planned to start after those) and the two-song encore.

With the exception of one song here -- "Joe," a song from the Bloody Buccaneers album they'd released two years earlier; it wasn't one of the 3 singles from the album, all of which charted -- these songs were all Top 40 and sometimes Top 10 hits in the Netherlands. Crowd favorites, as you'll see. Favorites with lots of young fans. (I can't help wondering if a lot of Boomer fans opted to watch from home rather than that cold, wet beach.)

Re the song about Vince Taylor there -- Taylor wasn't well known in America, but he was famous in Europe...and he was one of the inspirations for Bowie's Ziggy Stardust.

Such an amazing band. People who know them only through their two international megahits -- "Radar Love" and "Twilight Zone" -- have little idea how good they really were.
