The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm 64 and my hair is white.
I'm a man.
I figure from the way I feel, I have about 5 years - MAX - left to have fun before the nurses tie me to the wheelchair and put me facing the corner, drooling on myself.

Should I color my hair and stash?
Is it even worth it?
What color?
At home or a salon?
I think it might be fun to find out how much trouble I can get myself in.
What could possibly go wrong?

(33,643 posts)Not to mention how obvious it looks when people in their 60's and beyond ... color their hair.
It looks hella tacky as a man.
Plus, I think the gray looks good, myself.
Lot better things you can do with your money my friend.

It can be re-colored. Stripped of color shaved off to grow again.
Amanda the dog Lady shaves or has lost her hair. Shes beautiful.
People have to be less judgey judgerton about things like hair.

(118,691 posts)blue. Fortunately there was a 1 800 Clarol # on the box to call in the case of mistakes. They told me what colour to buy and it worked out. Seriously though 35 years ago I went to a salon to dye my hair and as I left the woman said "don't use a blow dryer or it will go blond". I've never had my hair dyed at a salon since. I quit dying it myself after 25 years because the dark dyes have carcinogens in them.

at hair salons have a higher rate of cancer if they use dark dyes. What I heard anyhow. I read it some where 15 years Go.

(4,661 posts)with it looking less obvious. I guess if a man goes to a salon, it could work. I think most men who color their hair do it at home, and it comes out too dark.

(14,024 posts)I can't think of a song he's recorded since "Danke Scbõn" in 1963.
It wasn't my intent to disrespect him, since I know nothing of him, but to suggest in reply to your inquiry that perhaps it's better to present oneself as nature has directed than to try to alter one's true appearance.

(54,405 posts)But now, I'm 70, and my wife turns 70 next month. I look it. As for her, she looks about 20 or more years younger. I don't touch my hair. She peps hers up a bit to give it more of its original blonde look. But if there's a geriatric ward in our future, it'll come as a nasty sudden surprise, not because of gradual deterioration between 64 and 70.
Like the song goes, we're still having fun, and she's still the one. Don't let the number weigh upon your shoulders. When my wife was 64, she was at one her doctors, getting a checkup, and the receptionist called her back, saying she had made a mistake on her date of birth. She said that never happens, but what mistake was that? The receptionist said for the year she filled in to be correct, she'd have to be SIXTY-FOUR years old!!!! As if she were talking about someone decades older. My wife said, "I AM 64!!" The receptionist just stared and said, "wow..." It's how you act, and take care of yourself. If you THINK 46, you have a better chance of making others believe it, too.

(22,720 posts)When I was fifty I was in denial and dyed my hair. Now that Im self-unemployed, I've gone completely white!
orangecrush
(19,572 posts)Is that my hair's shade of white - grey just doesn't look good to me.
Some people wear it well, I don't.

(49,004 posts)Unless you really want to resign yourself to a nursing home at an early age, you should be focusing on keeping yourself as healthy as possible. (I don't know if you've ever spent much time visiting people in nursing homes. I did when my mom was finally in rehab and then another nursing home, in her 90s, after she decided it was too boring to exercise and got weaker and fell and broke a hip, very badly.) Coloring your hair won't make you healthy. It can help your appearance a bit if done right, but it will never offset letting yourself go otherwise.
So you should be focusing on a really healthy diet and lots of exercise. Including yoga and other stretching exercises. (There's also facial yoga.) You can have the most beautiful head of hair in the world, but if your face and body look old, it won't help a lot with your appearance.
Merely coloring your hair isn't likely to make you feel better, either. Improving your health will.
The best way to age gracefully is to minimize aging by staying as healthy as possible.
And you should try for a positive attitude, too, as DFW said.
Focus on staying healthy, keeping active -- and doing things that bring you joy. You're never too old to learn something new you might have wanted to learn when younger but didn't have time for. You're never too old to appreciate art, or create it. You're never too old to make new friends, as important as it is to keep old ones.

(19,572 posts)The picture in the op was taken in the gym, which is where I spend a lot of time.
I am quite overweight, 6' 290 lbs.
This is genetic, my Father was a strong, well built powerful man, as I was, until he hit his 50's and put on a lot of weight.
It isn't because I slowed down on exercise, I haven't.
My diet needs to change radically, though.
I was in Tai Chi classes till I broke my fibula in January.
The cast just came off 3 weeks ago.
And yes, my self confidence took a shot to the jewels from a younger woman this month, after 4 months. I'm trying to stay off the pity pot, and learn from the experience, and see how I can improve myself.
So, there's that.
highplainsdem
(49,004 posts)the statement I quoted, which had upset me. It reminded me too much of my mom basically resigning herself to aging, after which she aged really rapidly. It always bothers me to hear older people talk about accepting aging, not trying to stay fit, since too often it's followed by much worse health.
Good for you for going to the gym. And Tai Chi is great -- a guy I know in his late 70s who's still in great shape and often working long hours gives credit to Tai Chi, the Chen style that's more of a martial art.
He watches his diet, too.
Sorry to hear about the broken leg. I hope you can get back to full use of that leg soon, if you haven't already.
And shame on that woman who hurt you.
orangecrush
(19,572 posts)And the woman didn't hurt me, I hurt myself.

How YOU want to be viewed.
Be yourself.
Own yourself.
Do your best, and have confidence that you are doing your best.
Quiet confidence will make you the most handsome man in the world, and will help any health issues.
I'll be 64 this year. I was blessed with my mother's hair. Any grey has turned pure white. I still have some black hair mixed in, but the white is a nice bright white that I love. So I would not dye my own.

It's better to just age, which is a completely fluid concept. Getting old is just getting old.
