Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsUpdate on dining room set refinishing progress (pictures).
I posted some pics awhile ago of my dining room table, pedestal and legs that I am in the process of refinishing. Weather is warm enough now to start on the chairs. They are coming out nice, better than I thought they would.
Two of the four chairs are complete except for the clear coat. Even with just the gel stain, they look completed because the gel stain contains polyurethane, hence the shine. However, that small amount of polyurethane in the stain is not enough to protect long term. So the clear coat will consist of three coats of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal.
Each chair takes me the following amount of time to get it to how they look in the pics.
Strip and sand to "stain ready" = 10 hours
3 coats of shellac to seal silicone contamination,
sanding in between each coat = 6 hours
2 coats of gel stain, dry brushed with 3
separate brushes = 6 hours
Subtotal per chair = 22 hours
3 clear coats, sanded in between each coat = 3 hours
Total per chair = 25 hours
Pardon the mess in the living room. Had a bunch of shit piled in there when spring cleaning another room, but that pic shows raw sanded vs. stained chair.

(34,461 posts)A 25 year old dining room set.
It was over $5000.
I decided to give away the set and get a new one in a different style.
