John Williams conducts a performance of his new theme for Kenobi

John Williams, perhaps the most well-known composer in the world, took the stage today at the annual Star Wars Celebration event to conduct a performance of the new theme he composed for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series which premieres on Disney+ on Friday.

It is an understatement to call the man legendary. His Imperial March theme from The Empire Strikes Back may be the most widely recognized piece of classical music from the last 50 or even 100 years, with his main Star Wars theme from the first movie coming in close behind.

This new piece is not flashy or bombastic; and to my ears it seems a bit somber as it reflects the dark times being depicted in the new series.

Or Vogon musicians?

Anyway, it sounded great. Odd to see so many audience members at a "classical music -ish" performance holding up cell phones to record it.

A little understated for a John Williams piece, I liked it. Thanks for posting.

I'm not sure what orchestra that was but since Disney was footing the bill (well, technically, the attendees who bought tickets to the convention), it could have been almost anyone.

... it would cost a fortune to bring them to Anaheim. Unless they were touring the U.S. anyway, if this is their "off-season" in London.

My guess is that it was the standard musicians employed by the studio to make all of their music. Disney is pumping out enough Star Wars and Marvel content, not to mention all of their other movies and shows, that they probably already employ a full-time orchestra or large group of musicians to perform all of the music.
