Fortunately for me they're only a 20 min. drive away. I hate sitting in my home with a phone to my ear waiting for someone to pick up.

That said, it depends on where you are. Offices in the back of beyond don't have much business, but those in heavily populated regions are impossible.

And signed me up since I never paid into it - I get about a third of what he would get.

When my sister had to call in each time one of our parents died, it took her days to get through to them just to make appointments to take their death certificates in and to file for death benefits. That was in 2013 and 2018. She tried mailing in the death certificate for Dad but when she finally got someone on the phone, the office did not know anything about the mailed certificate - she had to make an appointment, drive to the office local to my parents' house, and hand deliver it. Then they did not file for the death benefits, so she had to make another appointment, go back to that office, and do the paperwork again.

When Mom died, she had to go through the appointment crap again, but at least made sure that they got everything taken care of in one visit. It was still frustrating, especially since she was the executor, had been partial caretaker for years, and just wanted to get everything over and done.

By the way, we are still clearing up our parents' estates, and a cousin died intestate a couple of weeks ago, but named my sister as the one to take care of everything (to his significant other of twenty years, even though they never married), so she's now having to deal with that mess.
