Pose a question about a popular song

"Comme d'habitude" is a French song composed in 1967 by Jacques Revaux with lyrics by Claude Francois.

An American singer heard the song while on holiday in the south of France, then flew to Paris to negotiate the rights to the song.
After acquiring adaptation, recording and publishing rights to the song.
Back in New York, he re-wrote the original French song for Frank Sinatra, "subtly altering the melodic structure and changing the lyrics."
He started at one o'clock in the morning and finished the song at 5 in the morning.
He called Sinatra in Nevada (Caesar's Palace) and said "I've got something really special for you."

On December 30, 1968, Frank Sinatra recorded the singer's version of the song in one take.
The rest is history.

Who was the American singer?

Paul Anka...loved the post so I Googled it. My original guess would have been Joni Mitchell, but I didn't think she'd be friends with Sinatra. Thanks, red dog!
