Looking for ideas to help homeless uncle, please!

Last edited Fri Jun 3, 2022, 02:35 PM - Edit history (1)

Hi everyone,

I could use some help with ideas to find housing for my newly homeless uncle, please. He's had a bumpy road.

All was fine and he had a roof over his head until his partner passed. She did not have a will and her daughters were vicious toward him (and berate him on social media to this day, long after he's been out of their life), naturally taking the house and everything inside.

For a while, he lived in his car until he found housing with an elderly lady who could oblige his very limited means. Unfortunately, she recently kicked him out because she caught him watching television on a Sunday. Yes, this was against her rules. Yes, hyper religious type. Overall, her rules didn't allow TV after Wheel of Fortune ended at 7pm. Oy.

So, he was back in his car while trying to work with a social worker to find a place. He's yet to. Now, his car has blown up. Not literally, but suffice to say, enough of a catastrophe that he no longer has it as his final fallback in any safe way.

He has disability, not sure if it's full disability or SSI, and Medicare. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be going far for him in terms of help. Section 8 housing isn't an immediately viable option, we've been told the waiting list is over two years. Any ideas, anyone, please?

EDIT: He lives in Vero Beach, could move as far south as toward us in Port Saint Lucie, but we have no room in the house to take him in.

I don't know where you live, but you might check into an extended stay motel. japple Jun 2022 #2

But we do not have any space in the house to take him in, and the three of us here already are at each others' necks as it is, frankly!

I have a friend who manages one and IIRC you can rent by the week or the month. The units are mostly efficiencies, completely furnished, and there are laundry facilities on the premises. I think it even comes with cable TV and internet.
Good luck.

I have a cot with a little tent cover to protect from insects. A basic one costs about $130 but a good one that is very comfortable will run about $250. I find BLM land to sleep at and find other places. It can be a struggle at an older age as our bodies don't always react the way we want them to.

Now to do this, you will need enough money for food, gas and a few hygiene items and I don't think SSI will quite cover that unless you spend most of the month in one area to use little gas, but this kind of defeats the purpose.

I am almost 70 and still drive out to isolated Nevada and sleep on my little cot, however I do have a home to go back to. But I have been planning how to do it all in the near future. I do have a retirement that will allow about 10 days or so in cheap Motels where I can wash up and stuff. An SSI check would make this hard.

I think to live this way and enjoy it will take about $2000 month and you will need a car that is in decent running shape. I know this isn't what you are looking for, but it is a possibility, if he could make it work on an SSI check. It's a chance to see the world before we pass away.
