The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWith all the stuff that's been going on, I tried very hard to keep this to myself
But I have to let it out. I have to let go.
My last remaining cat, Katrina, died Wednesday night.
She was rescued by former DUer Ulysses around the time of hurricane Katrina, thus her name.
He knew I had recently lost a cat and as he already had one (a badass named Mr. Kitty) he reached out to me to adopt her.
Now my heart is broken.
I took her to be cremated yesterday and I've been crying every since.
I just have to get this off my chest.
My sister, who recently lost her fur baby to kidney disease, messaged me today urging me to adopt another cat. But I have to decompress. I don't want to go there right now.
My grand daughter, bless her heart, called the crematorium today to arrange a plaster footprint.
That was awfully sweet of her.

(49,005 posts)but I'm sure you feel you were just as fortunate to have her with you. I've lost four senior cats in the last 19 years, and it's always so hard to have to say goodbye. Even if you believe in eventual reunions, as I do.
Your granddaughter is an angel, to arrange for that plaster footprint.
I'm glad you have family members who understand and support you. And you'll always find support here.

(34,111 posts)I am so sorry. I lost a 14 year old kitty and a 15 year old goat just 10 days apart.
It hurts and I am so sorry you are going through this.
We had been looking for a dog to rescue and one came to us from the rescue we used before, right in the middle of this all. It has been a blessing for us because it was a perfect match with the dog we have.
I understand needing to decompress, it is so very hard. I am glad you have loved ones around to help you.
Much understanding and love sent to you.

Many hugs your way. Each and every paw print will remain with you - they helped form you to who you are. It is their gift.
I have lost maybe 20 fur babies over my life - it never gets easier - in fact it gets harder - but we all have to go forward albeit thankful for how made us better for knowing them.
Strength - you will move forward.
As for cats - they find me, I never find them. Your grand daughter sounds very empathetic and sweet - I can hope my own grand kids when they come will be similarly awesome.

(51,611 posts)If I had to drive to pick up her ashes and paw print I would have wrecked my car. My neighbor went for me.
My neurologist lost his baby a few months ago and has the same philosophy as I do...you can't replace your fur baby just like you can't replace a son, daughter, brother or sister. The pain and loss is unbearable and profound.

(16,193 posts)You gave your beautiful fur baby a wonderful life. Take all the time you need to grieve. We lost a kitty last week. Kids want another cat right away, but I need time. Sounds like you have come to a similar decision.
Peace CW.

(560 posts)there's nothing quite like a cat friend - they are the most sensitive loving pets.
the last of my scraggly old cats died years ago & I can't bring myself to go thru that ever again -
so I just love the cats that belong to friends & neighbors.

(19,565 posts)I've been there, I know the pain and heartbreak of the loss of a furry family member. I'm shedding tears right now in empathy for your pain.
You and she shared joy and happiness, love and companionship. You brightened her life as much as she did yours. It cuts deeply how they seem to be here for such a fleeting time in our lives, but the joy they share with us unconditionally in that all too brief time never goes away, and eventually, the beautiful memories do help take the pain down to more manageable levels.
You are in my thoughts and heart tonight. If you need to talk, please reach out. I can't make it better, but I do understand completely.

it can be so devastating to part company with our companions
i think if you need time to cope with this loss then you should give yourself that time to grieve and adjust. you'll know when your heart is ready for you to bring someone else into your life.
in the meantime be kind to yourself, take it slow.
it's wonderful to know katrina had someone like you who loved her so much. you made her life.
