My dog is inconsolable and my neighbors dog freaked out while being walked down the street and and a bad case of the runs right in the middle of the road.
I hate this shit so bad.

(10,433 posts)I got my dog over eight years ago, she's a shelter mutt and was about 1-2 when I adopted her. She's never been bothered by fireworks or thunder.
Until this year. Every night I take her for an after-dinner poop walk. Two days ago, about halfway into it she stopped and stared across the street. I didn't see anything, and pulled to get her moving again. She kept staring back, then tried to cross even though we hadn't gotten to the usual turn-around place. So we went back home.
Last night, barely a block from home, she started wanting to cross the street to head back. I wanted to go at least as far as one of the vacant lots a couple blocks away that she likes to crap in. We made it there and she peed. Two houses down from there live her favorite people. They are very nice to her, and give her good jerky treats. I sometimes have to drag her away.
I had to drag her over there, even though she saw them on their porch, and another neighbor whose dog is her buddy was there with them. She got over it long enough to say hi to everyone, eat the goodies, and then she dragged me away to go back home.
Tonight, she wouldn't even leave the property. I don't know what happened this year, it's actually less noisy than usual. But she has joined the ranks of dogs who hate July 4th.

(13,510 posts)where I am Friday night, but the worst has been last night and much worse tonight. My suburban community has never had a fireworks show. When I was a child we were allowed to shoot off fireworks. (Didnt like it) In my early thirties they made them illegal. In my fourties they made them legal again because they want the tax money. They try to pass it off that charities need to sell them to make money for their cause. I say B.S. They want the tax money.

(12,153 posts)Most (maybe all) home fireworks (especially the loud bombs) are illegal in CO, so I thought moving to Denver would be quieter on the 4th than it was in Nebraska. Wrong. My elderly nearly deaf poodle has been terrified every night for a week because of the explosions all around us. I can feel the sound vibrations, and so can he.
I hope your dog will be all right, and that your neighbors' dog will too.

(5,723 posts)I know it's not "nice" but every time a loud one goes off I hope the perp has just lost his ability to count to ten or see colors.

(22,480 posts)You'd think people would fucking learn that loud noises like this make a lot of people and animals upset and maybe they know but they don't care.

(646 posts)My poor scared dog.
I can hear them from all over.
Thank God this is the last night.
It helps her that I act like it's no big deal, and
the other dog doesn't care.
I hate it though.
Some neighbor set off their own before
dark. When I was outside at 8pm on purpose, to
avoid having her be scared before the shows started.
So frustrating.

(646 posts)But doesn't fix everything.
I drop things and the noise scares her.
Right now I need to let them out again
so I can get some sleep and idiots are
setting off their own. 🤦♀️
wnylib
(21,467 posts)when I say, "It's all right." She knows her name, my name, and the word "here." So I say, "Ember here. Wnylib here. It's all right." She seems to get the idea. Maybe it's my tone more than the words.
In past years, she has sat on the windowsill growling as if to protect us by warning off whatever made the noise. This year she was a little fearful until I said, "It's all right." Then she took her guard post at the window.

(652 posts)My dog is in his thundershirt, has been given a tranquilizer prescribed by the vet, and all to no avail. He is terrified, and shaking all over. It's weird, the shaking feels like it is inside his body.
Fireworks are legal in PA. And gunshots do not violate any noise ordinances.

(115,706 posts)so it's kind of noisy, but at least the neighbors aren't setting them off in their back yards. My cat seems pretty oblivious, just flicking her ears occasionally. But I know it freaks out a lot of dogs. The show in the park will be over pretty soon so I hope things quiet down, for the dogs.
mountain grammy
(26,621 posts)thankfully we don't have many private people shooting them off. fireworks are illegal in Colorado and nforcement is pretty good because of fires. My little guy had his calming treat, he's pretty good but my last pup was terrified. Could never leave her. Had her fourteen years and she was deaf the last two. It was kind of a blessing.
I hate this shit too.

(16,963 posts)I'm pet sitting a little dog, and took her out for her last walk just now. As soon as we stepped out the door, a bottle rocket went off. I coaxed the poor little thing into the back yard and she peed. I swore and I hope the knuckle-dragging idiots heard what I said.
