I've watched the Amazon series, and I'm currently in book 3. James SA Corey is the pen name for co-authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. Previous to the series, Franck worked as George RR Martin's assistant. You can see similarities in the characters between the two series as well as some narrative themes, e.g. Chrisjen Avasarala = Lady Olenna Tyrell, Bobbi Draper = Brienne, and Jim Holden = Jon Snow.
If you're a fan of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, then you will love this series, and it's finished. I recommend reading it until Winds of Winter comes out. Yes, I still have faith.

(35,440 posts)For book 2, "Caliban's War", get the audiobook. There were times that I bent over laughing in the street while listening to it. How old is your son? I ask because the language gets a bit salty.

I went right to the library site and book 1 was available so it is downloading now. I had just finished catching up on all the podcasts and needed a book. Perfect timing.
This son is my oldest but they are both over 35 now. That just seems impossible but it is fun that we enjoy a lot of the same things and they are old enough to share them with me.

(11,024 posts)Abraham did some of the comic adaptations of Martin's work and wrote some "Wild Cards" stories, I think.
I'm woefully behind on The Expanse - I've watched the first season and read the first novel and a few of the short stories. But I agree with everything you wrote.
Abraham's "Long Price Quartet" is a great fantasy series as well.

(10,427 posts)It's one of my favorite book series. The TV show is amazing. Shohreh Agadashloo plays Avaserala, and she is just superlative.
BTW, Daniel Abraham's fantasy novels are really good, too.
