Wikipedia has a good little biography on him and mentions some of his killings in detail.
Also, I've read a lot about him and never saw any evidence of that.
Hardin was a killer, but, as far as I know, there's no evidence of him being a coward as well.

(17,216 posts)But I think the backing band was paid a flat rate on that one. Since it's the only recording he's on with the Beatles (even though Bert Kaempfert called them "The Beat Boys" or some such), it would be the only opportunity he'd have for any royalties.

He never mentioned the amount, but some have speculated that he may have gotten as much as $9,000,000
malthaussen
(17,216 posts)Penny-a-record was the standard fee for royalties when the Beatles made the contract with Kaempfert, less 10% for "spoilage." It would take many pennies indeed for the record to produce USD 36 mil (since the royalties would be divided among the four bandmembers. Stu Sutcliffe wouldn't get any, since a) he wasn't on the record, and b) he's, like, dead).
He did a record with Lennon to which he retained the rights, so he may have made some money on that, but 9 mil sounds like fantasy. There just isn't that much money in royalties, it's touring (for the band) and publishing rights (for the songwriters) that makes the big bucks.

Interesting factoid about Muir Beach: Alan Watts was cremated at Muir Beach at 8:30 am, 16 November 1973. He was discovered deceased at 6:00 am (Watts planed it, Buddhist monks executed his wishes posthaste). His ashes were split, with half buried near his library at Druid Heights and half at the Green Gulch Zen Center. Each site was up a different valley that flowed to Muir Beach.

jmowreader
(50,562 posts)First, thanks for the compliment on my signature line.
The brown M&Ms thing was because of Van Halen's technical rider - the list of requirements a venue must provide to ensure a safe, successful concert. Van Halen had a massive, heavy stage with extreme power requirements - way more than most shows out there at the time, except maybe KISS. These days their set would be considered average - Ghost, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, and a lot of other bands have sets that dwarf the set Van Halen had - but back then such a set was almost unheard of. Reading and obeying the tech rider is of life-critical importance. They needed some quick way to tell if the promoter had read the document, so they put in a nonsensical line: "Put a bowl of plain M&Ms in the band's dressing room and sort out all the brown ones." If they walked into the room, looked in the bowl and saw no brown ones, they knew right away they'd have the things they needed to do a good show.

(4,858 posts)...Nimitz sent this to Halsey during Leyte Gulf, when Halsey inexplicably left a key strait unguarded. The Japanese Navy slipped right thru, and might have annihilated the US Philippine invasion force had the US Navy not jury-rigged a small battle fleet and stopped them. Nimitz sent Halsey the message--"Where is Task Force 34?", thinking that *they* were guarding the strait, and included the tag, "the world wonders" as a piece of code. Halsey was pissed off at the message--it was done openly, and Halsey felt humiliated. In fact, if things had gone just a little differently, Halsey could have been court-martialed. There is a good description of this incident, and the battle, in Herman Wouk's *War and Remembrance*.

Halsey was also criticized for his part of the Typhoon Cobra incident. Three ships sank, many damaged, 790 sailors died. Halsey escaped court-martialed in that case too. The novel and film "The Caine Mutiny" also by Herman Wouk, is partially based on the storm.

Huge open pit operation, all properly cleaned up, and closed.
