I conducted an experiment at work

I work in an office with 3 other people. I usually bring in plates and utensils and sometimes my coworkers actually contribute to the cost, which is ridiculous because it's really not my job to supply the office.

So I was on vacation for a week and a half. When I left there were 2 knives left. Now there is 1.

I think I'll just bring in a set of silverware for me to use and see what happens next.

It doesn't take long for others who may benefit from your efforts, to just assume it's your responsibility going forward.

I'm surprised you weren't chastened when you returned because you didn't leave enough utensils to cover your absence
