2. One of our now-departed cats did this. He would...

...usually run over to the water dispenser when we used it, and lap up the last few drops that were always there.

We watched him puzzle it out over several days of trial and error. He first pulled the lever down with his teeth, and would drink the water off the floor. He quickly moved to using his paw and would alternate between drinking directly from the stream of water and from the bowl that we kept under the spigot to catch the results of his clever efforts. The dispenser was the old-fashioned looking ceramic Hinckley Springs vat, and didn't have a catch basin.

When this kitty would perform this feat in front of visitors, everyone would look on in amazement and want to know, "How did you teach him to do that?" "We didn't," we would say. "He figured it out onw his own." I never tired of seeing him do it.
