Swimming with whale sharks... Old Fords in front of the house I grew up in.. Sometimes they wake me up.... very strange. It's like going to the movies every nite.... No mood or mind altering substances involved...
You?

(2,572 posts)I dream regularly but I have been having very vivid dreams all week. I'm not writing them down so they're gone quickly, but I have no idea what's precipitating this.

I had no idea that some people don't dream at all - or, if they do, have no memory of having done so.

(13,924 posts)in the middle of the night, just jot down a few points of the dream. Don't turn on the light, just write it down even if it's like gibberish. It will jog your memory the next morning...
Worked for me!! YMMV

(23,147 posts)I had several dreams that kept repeating with slight differences. One night I actually resolved the dream and wasn't all alone at the end. I've dreamed very little since then. In my 40's I developed a sleep disorder and by the time I was 45 the one thing that worked for me (kava kava) was taken off the market. I started smoking pot which helped me sleep. 25 years later, I now have a fitbit which tracks my sleep and I discover that my dreaming is way off the norm. Some nights I don't dream at all. I am wondering if this is affecting my memory and if I need to do something about it?

(70,198 posts)see a sleep doc. that's bad.
I thought sleep dr. were only for sleep apnea and narcolepsy, didn't know they were also good for insufficient dreams? Is it bad when I usually dream, but a lower level than normal, and only sometimes (maybe once every 2 weeks) that i don't dream. I sleep usually 6:30-7:30 hrs.
I have an HMO so have to see my primary care first. I do feel hopeless about this. Without pot I don't sleep - period. With pot I sleep good, except for not having a good level of dreams. When I tried rx pills, I hated them, felt groggy & drugged in the morning. I feel like lose/lose with this and hate that feeling.

(23,147 posts)I thought I was ok until I got the new Fitbit which provides a lot more sleep information and found out about the consistently low level of dreams and occasionally deep sleep.

(14,033 posts)Yeah, sounds like you should see a sleep doc.

(3,722 posts)And I am fine with that. Let dreams be. I do not need to own the odd thoughts that pop-up.
Dreams happen; pleasant or not, confusing or revealing, the dream is created from our memories, knowledge, and desires.
We create whole worlds in our dreams and when we wake, the entire creation is withdrawn into one's self.
The self is simply the observer of what is, awake or asleep.
Asleep the world disappears to be recreated in dreams.
Awake the entire world is nothing other than ideas in the mind, like dreams.
The difference is that only one being sees the dream world.
Awake, many see and say, this is the "real" world (and the real-me) and thus assume it is not a dream.
Observing consciousness sees no difference.

(16,178 posts)most of my vivid dreams include driving, swimming, walking in different areas that I grew up in. I've tried to keep the dream going after I realize I'm part of it.
There's one dream in particular that involves driving up a mountain to a cabin overlooking a very scenic view. I feel myself getting out of the car and walking to the door of the cabin, knocking on the door and then the dream poofs out.
I think I'll try the Carlos Casteneda method and look at my hands the next time it happens.

(16,178 posts)it's basically a fictional account of a person learning there are other dimensions in this one. "A Yaqui Way of Knowledge" is the first in a series.
Enjoy it. Even if it's fiction, it's an interesting read.

(21,901 posts)I rarely remember dreams. When I do, it's usually just a snippet... like a "still" from a movie. No clue why I'd be dreaming about venetian blinds.

(24,317 posts)I either didn't dream at all or don't remember any dreams. I thought that was a good thing at the time, and it didn't really seem to affect me negatively in any way. I now dream almost every night and mostly only remember the dream for about a minute or two no matter how hard I try.
What I really hate is a very vivid dream that I remember very well and in that dream someone I know does something that makes me hate them. It takes awhile to shake that off.

... I awake from REM sleep.
I used to wear a Fitbit to bed, which supposedly monitored my sleep based on my movements and perhaps other factors. If I remembered my dreams, Fitbit always indicated that I was in REM sleep immediately prior to me awakening. If I didn't recall any dreams, I always awoke from non-REM sleep.
My dreams are mostly a weird combination of my recent experiences OR my ideas/thoughts. I don't bother trying to interpret my dreams as much anymore, but that seemed to be the pattern for me when I did. It sometimes took me awhile to remember a brief experience or thought from the previous day that helped explain something that seemed bizarre in my dream, but I'd usually make the connection eventually.
I've also completely forgot dreams if I fell asleep again right away after experiencing them, despite how I felt certain at the time that I'd still remember them later.
Edit:
I had a hypnopompic hallucination (after awakening from a neighbor slamming their door) many months ago that was briefly terrifying. I had fallen asleep in my recliner, with the lights still on, and I awoke to see a ghostly-white and sad-looking family of Native Americans staring at me from a few feet away. Then they faded away.
Yet I didn't recall dreaming about Native Americans beforehand.
A plumber was scheduled to break through the concrete foundation in my restroom with a jackhammer, and then dig through the underlying dirt to fix a major leak of an underground pipe, a couple days later. The hallucination made such an impression on me, I became superstitious and half-wondered if the plumber would find old Native American bones or something. LOL! (Which never happened.)

(7,504 posts)not for sleep apnea (long story). I don't dream much, but when I do dream, my recorded sleep apnea levels go way up.
It used to be more often. Maybe it is my older age. When I do dream, they are often all mixed up. Occasional nightmare and sometimes a nice dream I didnt want to end, lol. Can be vivid but I always know it was a dream very shortly after.
