Just got stung by a scorpion on the thigh. Little bugger was in my pants.

This'll be the fourth or fifth time, but that's not bad for forty years in SE Az. Usually a good sting followed
by a little numbness around the bite area and that's it. The things I'll do to get a little sympathy from Jeannie.

buy me a little good karma from the occasional venomous species I find from time to time.

I don't see a lot of scorpions in Colorado, but the tarantulas are on their mating move! LOL

It was big enough to stand out as a USO (unidentified standing object) at about 75 ft distance, and I went to see what it was.

Not a hawk but a wasp.

The Sierra Nevada foothills have them (well, my place is rampant with them)
Spoiler alert below (gruesome content)
My neighbor below the ridge was surprised at the vast number of them buzzing about here on the ridge.
MAYBE I AM JUST LUCKY!!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarantula_hawk

Spoiler:
A tarantula hawk is a spider wasp (Pompilidae) that preys on tarantulas. Tarantula hawks belong to any of the many species in the genera Pepsis and Hemipepsis. They are one of the largest parasitoid wasps, using their sting to paralyze their prey before dragging it to a brood nest as living food; a single egg is laid on the prey, hatching to a larva which eats the still-living prey. They are found on all continents other than Antarctica.

Back then, Ft Huachuca wasn't a part of the city and it was mostly Fry and a big trailer park just past the Junction that was called Charlston Road. Population 6,000 or so. Then Ft Huachuca joined the city and the population doubled. I went to the old Buena before it was replaced with a car lot.

I don't think Moson Road existed back then, or at least have anything on it. There was Hereford Rd and Ramsey Canyon which did have some houses on it.
And Miracle Valley. Just WOW! On the other hand, Bisbee has to be one of the coolest towns around.
Since it is so close to the border, half the city was LEO of some type; Border Patrol, customs, and some military police if you were caught in the dud area.

It is a hidden gem and a good place to be. Lots of area's to explore around there. I still miss Parker Lake.

Lots of big ants on my rural property. Also 2 buffered vitamin C within the first few minutes. If you don’t have buffered C, drink some salt water or baking soda. Gem from my environmental Dr. It works.

Yrs ago in Mexico I was stung by a jellyfish while swimming in the ocean and the hotel clerk casually told me to pee on it. It helped big time so now I do it for all bites.

Ouch.

My mom used to tell the story about traveling in Mexico before WW II. She was advised to always shake out her shoes before putting them on. One morning, she shook out a scorpion!

A few years ago I brought wood into the house for a fire. The next day I discovered an insect bite on my right hand. By the evening it had swollen to about 50% larger than normal. My heart rate increased and I had a 102º fever.

The ER doctor told me it was a brown dwarf spider bite. She gave me a couple of injections of antibiotics and within an hour my symptoms had diminished. The next morning I was back to normal.

Bug bites, snake bites and the like can be very dangerous. We are fragile creatures!

The baking soda will neutralize the poison (acid based) and help pull it out of your flesh. The numbness should go away faster.

4 or 5 times total? that is pretty normal for a summer around here.

I'm not sure of my total this year, but we've had about ten or more since June. Very good
year for rain.
I was hoping the scorpion sting would give me powers like Spiderman got from his spider bite,
but no. The numbness is gone today. I was inches from being a numb nuts.

As much as people like to disparage Crocs (the shoes), I have to say that white crocs, with all those holes, are a good idea in scorpion-land.

I've currently got a couple scorpions in a cage, awaiting release somewhere far from my house. They seem to like coming into my home. I think I've mostly desensitized myself to it; the most recent one didn't even get my heart rate up when I spotted it (on bathroom floor in middle of night) I keep a UV flashlight next to my bed for this purpose.

Thankfully, never been stung yet. Not looking forward to that near-inevitability.
