And we don't normally write 001, 004, or 009 that way.

It's "invisible" with 11 and 22, but it works.

23, 32 and higher fail because the product of the two digits is >4, so you get carries when you square (think (10A + B)^2 = 100A^2 + B^2 + 20AB
If AB = 1,2,3, or 4, you don't get a carry.

In base two there are no such cases, but base sixteen has more.
