I was texting a friend last night, and he told me to check out Licorice Pizza on Prime. I never repeated the name of the movie, I just told him I'd check it out. So tonight I turn on the tv and pull up Prime, and the very first movie advertised was Licorice Pizza! I have an iphone SE and I have an Amazon Echo, so it records things I say, but I never said the name of the movie aloud. I know that the government has records of our messages, but what would that have to do with Amazon? Is Amazon reading my texts too? This sort of thing has happened to me many times. Sometimes things I only think about pop up for sale. Who all can listen in on our texts?

(17,019 posts)We notice things that we have been thinking about. There are 100s of adds that flash in front of our eyes but we dont notice them.

(16,858 posts)Our minds filter out everything except what they're already thinking about. That's a relief! I didn't want to be worried about who was reading my texts. I don't say anything to really be ashamed of in my texts, but I wouldn't want everybody to know my conversations.

What cracks me up is when I searched eBooks in Kindle and kept getting opposite world.
If you liked this DEM, try this Reich Wing.
BLAH.

(16,858 posts)Even though the whole thing is probably a misperception on my part, it still feels creepy. Guess I need to learn to ignore it.

(5,125 posts)Was in Small Business Management in college and they had a marketing class.
Found out EVEN I am marketable.... I often buy generic because it's same as the fancy stuff, no fancy packaging or gimmicks, just what I need for whatever I'm doing.
So even someone who hates being marketed to, gets marketed.
Sigh.

(16,858 posts)My friend watches a lot of movies, so he usually recommends good ones, but I didn't care for that one. The conclusion of the movie was obvious from the start, and the movie just plodded along toward the end. There were no surprises. Don't waste your time. Thanks for the heads-up about the Hunter Thompson documentary, I missed that. That must be interesting.

(16,858 posts)But it was like watching Charlie Brown. People were walking along saying things to each other, but there just wasn't much going on.

(16,858 posts)I had to force myself to finish it. I wanted to watch all of it in case he wanted to talk about it with me, but if my friend hadn't recommended it, I would have quit watching after about 30 minutes. There were some good actors in it, but that doesn't change the fact that it was a shitty movie.

(153,202 posts)I quit watching after about 30 mins! I did like how authentic they were with the 70's, but that is all.....I honestly did not really get what it was supposed to be about....

Within about 5 minutes, there was an ad on my phone for horse feed. I have never even sat on a horse and had never before seen any ads about anything to do with horses.
And I have no listening devices in my house other than the cell phone.

(16,858 posts)It doesn't seem like a coincidence. After all, you haven't shown any Interest in horses. But how would any software be able to be responsive to our environments at our homes? These sorts of things happen to people all the time. I wish one of the news shows, like maybe John Oliver's show, would do a segment about this. I don't think I could do the research on it myself. I know little about computers and algorithms and things of that nature.
