(40,212 posts)My grandmother had a refrigerator for 30 years. Not anything like the crap they make now that cost $2,500.

(1,366 posts)It was still in use as a "garage" backup as of 2016. That's probably about 65 years.
No repairs that I know of.

(40,212 posts)In 1987, when she moved, it still worked perfectly. And never needed a repair that I know of.
My refrigerator, on the other hand, has had 3 repairs in the last 6 years. The last one $300 plus to repair the stupid ice maker.
The repair man told me the average life of a refrigerator is now 6 years. Mine is 11 years old, so I guess its living in borrowed time.

Today, it's the soft drinks and dessert refrigerator in Mom's home, and it still works just fine. The only issue is having to defrost the freezer, every three to six months, depending on the humidity.

(10,434 posts)I had my refrigerator replaced a couple years ago by the home warranty. I managed to get a nicer one, with the extra drawer. No internet or touch screen, but I have no use for that.
But there were several features on that vintage fridge that I'd like to have, like that removable "picture window crudite tray". And the pullout shelves. Plus a simple icemaker like that. They always seem to break, and even the new one I got will freeze up if if keep the fridge section colder than 36 degrees, which I do.

(9,182 posts)Weve bought 3 more since then, and found out several months ago that the current model, now 4 years old, has a design flaw that will render the ice maker inoperable and unrepairable at some point in the near future.
On the other hand, my mother-in-law has a refrigerator in the basement that is more than 60 years old and still works fine. We have a Monkey Wards fridge in the basement that was here when we bought the house 19 years ago. Its even older than that, because Wards stopped being a department store in 2001. It still works fine.
They sure dont make em like they used to.
