There was one phone line serving all the ranches in the valley.

You'd turn the crank and the bells on all the phones would ring. Every ranch had it's own distinctive pattern, so did the operator in town.

You weren't supposed to listen in on other people's calls, but somehow everyone in the valley knew everyone else's business.

When I was a kid we had five digit phone numbers and party lines as well.

I used to have a big black Western Electric 500 dial phone on my desk that our kids would show off to their friends who had no idea how to use it, just like the people this film was made for.
