Tasting Notes

A combination of second press juice from all of the white wine holdings covering the entire four hectares. Because this includes everything from the five-year old vines of Kosmopolit to the old-vine Gruner planted in 1960, it's considerably more serious than most wine bottled in the liter format. This is a field blend of local grapes planted in the area of the capital city of Vienna. The name is a play on words as Wien means Vienna and Wein means wine.

Graphic designer turned winemaker Jutta Ambrositsch manages this estate of four hectares with her husband. Their 'Wien' liter is a winner. It's a lovely white made from a blend of grapes from all of their vineyards. It's also an homage to Vienna's unique wine culture. This capital has the highest wine production within city limits per capita of any urban center in the world. The vineyards in surrounding hills look over the palaces and high rises in the central city. This aromatic wine has some body on it with yellow plums, melon, and flowers on the palate. Its off-dry profile is balanced by vibrant acidity. It's more complex than most wines sold by the liter. Pair it with bold flavors. Think kimchi bokumbap or currywurst on rye.

About the Producer

Vienna, Austria The Appellation of Vienna dates back to pre-roman times and has 1,650 acres under vine, all within the current city limits. These vineyards are home to the now famous Viennese Gemischter Satz (Viennese Field Blends, meaning “mixed set”) which, in an effort to preserve the city's cultural heritage, have therefore been recognized by Slow Food as an Ark of Taste and a Presidia Project. A former graphic designer, Jutta Kalchbrenner discovered viticulture and made a like change in the mid-2000s. She took on vineyards on the Grinzinger, a hillside tourist destination near Nussberger Prussia and Sommeregg. Jutta farms the mixed fields of vines and old vine Riesling under her maiden name, Ambrositsch. She works extremely naturally, using Biodynamic methods to achieve a fresh, balance result.
