Hot, grumpy, bored. Sorry to whine, but this sucks.

(13,571 posts)A friend gave me a chargeable lantern and something called a power station that you charge up in advance and then you can plug certain things into it like your phone, etc. to charge up

(7,820 posts)We dont have air conditioning, usually a fan is enough, but not having even a fan when it was this hot was rough. And really hard to sleep. I didnt have a battery powered fan, but I do now.

(13,571 posts)I remember living in SoCal when it was 118 degrees and no AC. I was 8 months pregnant.
And your humidity in TX is likely higher than SoCal.
Those of us who have shelter and water are blessed even by that. I hope things improve.
My Kansas in-laws used to talk about how they would dampen a bedsheet to put over themselves at bedtime and hope they fell asleep before it dried out.

(7,820 posts)But hotter heat waves is obviously gonna be more normal. Been fortunate that for the most part where I live (Bay Area) is moderate. Real high highs and low lows are rare. Just need to be more prepared for when they do hit. 🙂

(145,631 posts)I have a generator now
Mr.Bill
(24,334 posts)hot weather. I finally got a generator that will run my refrigerator, spare upright freezer on my shed, TV, internet and some lights. It will not run any 220V appliances like my air conditioner. In my spare freezer I keep 12 one gallon jugs of frozen water. If I set three or four jugs of the frozen water in front of a fan, it will cool a room rather well for about 4-5 hours before I need to put new jugs out. If I keep my freezer running I can have a constant supply of fresh frozen jugs to use.
I should mention I live in a small house, an 800 sq ft mobile home. I have tested this and it works well for one room at a time. As luck would have it, since I set it up a few years ago I have not needed it.

(7,820 posts)We may want to try some of that.
Mr.Bill
(24,334 posts)Even though I haven't needed them for "air conditioning", one time my refrigerator failed and while waiting a few days for my new one I bough a few cheap styrofoam coolers and used the jugs to keep my perishable foods cold. Our mobile home park has an aging water system which sometimes requires repairs involving having our water shut off for 4-8 hours. We get advance notice, and I just pull a few jugs out of the freezer for thawing and we can use it for drinking, hand washing, drinking, etc.
Another thing the jugs do is fill empty space in the freezer which makes it more economical to run. Any empty freezer space should be filled with them.
