(10,216 posts)I would think those paws would be very useful at catching mice.
Though actually the best mice catcher I knew was a big boy I got from the rescue. If there was a mouse that passed near him, he would catch it. But his claws had been removed when I got him, so he had to stay inside. He evidently didn't need them for mice catching.

(268 posts)... polydactyls first came over to the colonies in the 1600's. Sailors regarded them as good luck, perhaps because of mouse-catching abilities. As trade expanded along the eastern seaboard, so did the thumb-cats.
Ours doesn't get much opportunity to go after mice, but he's pretty wicked with the fuzz-balls we leave lying around.

(10,216 posts)It sounds like they maybe good mice catchers.
I could see how sailors would want to keep them on ships.
Cute name for polydactyl!

(22,278 posts)his home in Key West. There about fifty of them and they have complete run of the place; not all of them are polydactyls but it is pretty cool to take the tour and see all the cats. They are quite friendly.
The guides told us there is always a breeding pair or two to keep the line going
