These are warrior wasps and when disturbed they perform a striking threat display

Those guarding a nest beat their wings against their bodies to produce this drumming sound, like matching soldiers 1/2
...
2/2 if drumming from within the nest won’t deter they escalate their defensive warning by moving outside like this

I've watched so many cartoons, I thought they were going to swarm into the shape of a giant hammer and come after them trying to bludgeon them to death.
