(27,813 posts)most bread isn't square, it's oblong. Diagonal is better on the square.

(7,422 posts)You can fan out the two halves on the plate to make room for an assload of chips.
The horizontal-cutting crazies get their chips all up in the sandwich making a big mess.

(231 posts)When I ate sandwiches I did use a diagonal cut, but as a celiac sufferer and have never found a gluten free bread that isn't full of other ingredients that upset my stomach. I have had a stomach ache since I could ever remember, then went gluten free around 2017, I was born in 1951, now I do not have daily stomach aches, diarrhea, (I know too much info but it is true). Now 60+ years later I can eat food that I enjoy and not get sick. When our children were young definitely diagonal, again small triangles.

(1,706 posts)cut sandwiches horizontally, but I preferred the diagonal cut I'd get in restaurants. So I've always cut sandwiches diagonally.
When my kids were little, I'd cut the diagonal halves in half, position the points of two triangles together, and called it a "butterfly sandwich", which they seemed to like.

(17,295 posts)I swear it just didnt taste right! The answer is diagonal, and in an emergency a vertical cut will do, but horizontal? No, that just isnt right.

(12,426 posts)So egg salad, tuna fish, PB&J, all vertical because it has the smallest cut edge, reducing leakage; cold cuts, diagonal for easier mouth insertion.
