(19,558 posts)17 year old me watched North Vietnamese tanks rolling over the U.S. embassy gates in Saigon, thinking "we've been fighting this war since I was old enough to remember, my older bro barely made it back alive, and you fuckers just sold out 57,000 dead Americans."

(25,214 posts)I was from an abusive family. I was sexually abused by my grandmother. Urine infections-doctor asked no questions. Punched, slapped.
called a wh--e by my brother, as he would sit on my chest and mom and dad closed the windows so the neighbors would hear. And no one helped me. Went to the hospital twice--for broken hands and a bruised neck from a attempted strangle. And no one helped me. Got through it with music and my art. In fact they have it on film, where my brother and sister beat me. And no one helped. Finally, got out and got a student loan in my own name. With the help of Pell, and work study, the white bird had finally flown. It continued verbally. Nasty words spoken to belittle me, my husband and my adopted son,,All my art I made thrown out. When she called my son a bastard whose own mother didn't want him, the white bird finally flew and I went no contact. There are a lot of things that happened, helped to have my music, art, and husband and son.
I apologize for this post. This song among others helped me,

(7,715 posts)but from a sad time (the same month the Beatles broke up). I love this song.
Not to take away from your great post, but this song reached number one in the UK in 2003 with a fellow named Gareth Gates. His video featured the hit UK tv show "The Kumars at No. 42", based on an family of Indian origin hosting a TV show in their house. Note the dancers in 2003!:
I believe it had a big resurgence in the mid-1990s when it was featured on Ron Howard's movie "Apollo 13".
This is simply a timeless song.

(15,540 posts)Whenever I'm in a nostalgic mood, I just find the music from my youth. It was such a big part of my life and still is. My father was a musician so music was important in our family.

It still gives you access to a lot, but there were some excellent videos made by amateurs that vanished with the new algorithms.
