Not all have classically beautiful voices, but I love them anyway in the context of their music. Oops, someone above mentioned Peter Gabriel, love him too. Edit to add: Left Trent Reznor off--can't do that! Edit again: Bono! Eddie Vedder! Dave Grohl!

Steve Marriott
Steve Winwood
Justin Hayward
Bruce Springsteen
Bono
John Fogerty
John Mellencamp
Eddie Vedder
Rory Gallagher
Barry Hay (Golden Earring)
Campino (aka Andreas Frege, Die Toten Hosen)
Joe Cocker
Rod Stewart
Paul McCartney
Sting
Mick Jagger
Greg Lake
Gregg Allman

16. Jon Bon Jovi sounded awful live

Every time I saw him. Which was 3 times. That was enough to convince me that he either needed to find a genre that suited his voice better, or that he was studio magic to keep a pretty boy out front.

Take your pick.

My five would be:

Ann Wilson of Heart

Freddie Mercury of Queen

Pat Benatar

Chris Hall of Stabbing Westward. He's incredible live. Really.

Tie: Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks

Probably in that order.

Some of them are, though!!

This is in somewhat of an order of favorites:

Michael Hutchence (RIP)

Honorable Mention: Michael Stipe

(I would put Madonna on this list, but I don't think she qualifies as rock)

That brings back memories because high school teenage boy me not only liked her music, but I was absolutely smitten with "Mad About You" era Belinda -- even though she clearly had a man in her video (and I think that guy might have been her real-life husband/boyfriend at the time).
