The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsIs Reddit an alternative to Twitter?
I've looked at it less than a dozen times over the years, only less than Twitter. As one who is a Meaningless-Boycotter (think, "Family Circus" years back), MUSK/Drumpf/Twitter just cries out for my meaningless boycotting. Why is/was Twitter a bigger thing for commenting than Reddit?
Is it just for fun (I don't need much fun)? Once saw an enthralling discussion about Roman history, by some heavy duty scholars. It can't beat DU's format (or DU's anything else).
A GD DUer suggested to potential boycotters that we wait till after the midterms to not "cede the field"
50 Shades Of Blue
(10,053 posts)If I want to read discussion about them, I look at a couple political subs on Reddit.
ETA: But I always look at DU first!

(3,266 posts)I use it just for fun, steer well clear of politics there. Theres some cleverly funny subs. But, if you searched for subjects that interest you, Im betting youll find some great conversations.

(34 posts)Then again, everything remotely political is a cesspool now. I use Reddit for discussions regarding spiritual woo stuff I'm into and the latest discussions on House of the Dragon.

(13,901 posts)There are quite a few different apps for Reddit - if you don't like one, try another. I'm partial to Sync.
One feature in Reddit that DU could use is the abilty to collapse threads and subthreads at any level. Makes it much, much easier to see which post is being replied to in a long thread.

(21,910 posts)* correction, you can follow people. thanks sl8
I don't go to Reddit for breaking news. Twitter seems to get that first.
so you can look at just the subreddits that you follow or you can just browse through their entire site (which is H-U-G-E.) Like DU, some groups have more action than others. You name a topic and Reddit has a section for it.
https://www.reddit.com/ you can just start here a browse everything.
for example I follow:

https://www.reddit.com/r/coolguides/

(17,460 posts)I have a lot of Reddit "karma", which I guess is determined based on the number of "upvotes" vs. "downvotes" that your post receives.
That being said...I barely know how to use Reddit, and I don't really understand how it works.
It seems very convoluted, clumsy and confusing...All I know how to do on it is to make a post, and respond to other posts.
As a source of information though, it's fantastic. There is a "sub-reddit" for every topic imaginable, and you can spend hours reading informed opinions about any subject.
To me, even though relatively small in scale as compared to other platforms, DU is the best. But if you really want to dive deep into a subject with tens of thousands of opinions, Reddit is great if you can teach yourself how to navigate it.

I don't get how Reddit works either.
I'm shallow, a Generalist on the surface of things. I already waste my time, don't have it to spare on going deep at Reddit.
As much as I'm at DU I don't know how some of our DU stars have a hundred thousand posts.
