As a child---Shutes and ladders, Trouble, Operation, Hide and Seek
As an adult-Solitaire, battleship --yes I still like to play --and Trivial Pursuit
Games can be indoor or outdoor games.

(27,827 posts)Now I like Bananagrams, Boggle, and Trivial Pursuit.
I would probably like Scrabble if it weren't for the stupid Scrabble dictionary with words like "aa" and "qi" that Scrabble players memorize and insist are real words.

(2,286 posts)Risk as a kid....
Also loved the variant deck building games like Dominion and DC deck building which reward strategy over money (unlike magic the gathering).
The Harry Potter TCG had a great mechanic and the best cards were frequently uncommon and not super rare so extra cash didn't help.

(8,387 posts)I used to like the game where one person has a football and attempts to stay away from everyone else who is trying to tackle the person with the football.
It had an offensive name, which I imagine has been changed.

(8,387 posts)There are no teams. There is no scoring. There is one person with a ball who is attempting to avoid being tackled by the entirety of other persons there.

a popular game at recess where one boy would get the ball and the others would try to catch him. When they caught him they would pile up on him They called it the dog pile game. That ended one day when the ball deflated. So they threw it away. The cheap principal yelled over the loud speaker--what happened to the blue ball. You are not getting anymore blue balls until the missing blue ball is found. I laughed. Being a nun, I don't think she knew what a blue ball was.

(8,387 posts)Yep. Mainly an opportunity to test how tough or crazy you are. Probably a better name.
A dog pile in our neck of the woods could be declared without a ball under various circumstances, such as someone acting like a jerk. No ball required.

(115,829 posts)In grade school we played a chaotic game called Bombardment in which each team had multiple softish balls that they threw more or less randomly at the other team. If you got hit by one of the balls you were out - it was a last man standing game.

(8,387 posts)It had a name which would be very offensive now, but I was unaware of the offensive definition of the key word at the time.
My curiosity is whether the game still exists, because surely it would not be played under that name.
Or, it could have gone the way of buck buck which is a similar sort of rough game that can result in injuries.

(503 posts)Its a shame the name cant be said here because all youd be doing is giving an accurate reflection of what it was called, you wouldnt be saying it to be offensive. But such is this site.
I was one who wanted the football to try and get away. There were a lot who played who were scared to take the ball, they just wanted to take cheap shots at others while never taking the risk.
Effete Snob
(8,387 posts)Yep. I couldnt catch a pass to save my life, but it was good for running and dodging, and was a high impact game. Staying in your feet while a bunch of others are trying to take you down is a feeling of triumph.
It could get rough, but yeah, not to take a turn, but still wanting to play was an obvious character flaw.

(2,549 posts)Still a fan of chess but prefer human over machine opponents. And few folks play though wife is learning. She refuses the concession of pieces to try and even the playing field which leads to mostly losses which are discouraging. But shes game at times to give it a go.

(2,549 posts)Mastering chess is on a whole different level. Im a hack but recognize how difficult it is to learn hence my suggestion for the dominant player to take some of their pieces off the board from the start as a handicap. I learned at five from my mother who removed her queen, queen bishop, queen knight and queen rook.

(12,158 posts)In the early 1950s, when I was 9 and 10, my neighborhood pals and I took turns throwing knives into the ground, near each other's bare feet. The target kid of each game moved a hand or foot to where the knife was, and then it was his or her (ok, I was the only girl) to throw the knife. It was an early version of Twister.
Sometimes my mom's favorite paring knife was The Knife. A few times, it got bloody, so I rinsed it under the kitchen sink faucet, dried it on my shirt, and put it away. Mom never knew, but a time or two she wondered why I was wearing socks with my sandals, and why I was limping.

(17,015 posts)had a pile of bricks they built up into a wall and then take turns shoving it over on each other. No name but your post reminded me ofthe story
There were a range of throw sharp objects with the risk of getting hit games derived from Mumblety Peg.

Now, because of injuries and arthritis, my favorite game is fetch, with me throwing and Tosca and Lily doing the retrieving. We all enjoy it.

(25,300 posts)the soccer ball we used still stung. Maybe it was because she picked a captain of only one team and the rest were on the second team. Thought that was unfair. Should have picked two captains so the teams were more evenly matched.

(17,015 posts)When we were kids, it was fun to play inside or out. When our kids were young, I think we played it, but maybe they played hide and seek with their cousins. My husband and I played it with the grandkids, and we all had a great time.
I still like playing Scrabble. I like any word games.
I liked games no one else wanted to play. There was a verbal game called Links, and any number of people could sit in. One person would say a word, and then the next person would say a word that somehow related to the first word. It could mean the same things, or rhyme, could be a pun, just depended on who was playing how creative it got. We played it a few times, but usually everyone had ingested something, so they didn't track lol
There was a game called Blackbox, for 2 players. One person would mark places on a card that corresponded to the game board. The other person would call out coordinates and there were colored chips you'd put along the edge of the board, depicting a hit, miss or reflection. I liked it, but no one else would play. I still have the whole game.

(25,300 posts)guess what it was, said. Burt Reynolds and Burt Convey brought the game to television. I keep thinking Pictionary put I don't think that was it.

(503 posts)As a kid, I liked playing Candyland, tho I would get upset if I got the Hearts and had to go back to the bottom.
As I got older, say teenage years, probably Monopoly and Risk. Risk could take days to play, so while enjoyable, it could drag out.
Now, its Hearts or Spades. Maybe Pinochle if I can find people who know how to play.
