The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsJust discovered I have a moderate milk allergy, so it has to go
Discovered it can also be in gum and some
toothpaste. Wtf.
In any event, this is all parts of milk and milk
proteins. And from any animal.
Looking for a good resource for those of you with
this issue, experience, and maybe a couple of good cookbooks. Suggestions?
Also found out I'm allergic to
Mushrooms
Parsley, maybe cilantro (I can have cumin)
Cayenne
Sage
Thyme
Vanilla
Alpha
Plum/prune
Black pepper/white pepper
I'll be doing the elimination diet thing.

(32,729 posts)I like the almond, oat and a few others. I like the taste and it keeps longer when open.
Good luck. I've had a few food allergies that have come and gone.

(32,729 posts)Not a foodie. I try to eat to live and not live to eat.
Never have cooked with my milk substitute. Dont see why you couldnt. Mostly I use the plain 30 calorie per serving almond milk on my oatmeal snd in my coffee. GF drinks it and is lactose intolerant. We have great well water and thats what I drink.

(7,876 posts)or only a few very safe foods, such as grapes or sautéed cabbage for a couple days.
Each day, i can add 2 foods to the diet to see their effect.
I eat a lot of fruit. Once in a while, I treat myself to some street food such as fried crepes .
A friend has alpha-gal allergy. A tremendous list of forbidden foods.

(32,729 posts)always have some Benadryl handy. I get the hard pink pills, not the capsules. I crush one up and put it under my tongue and it works quicker. I still have injectable Benadryl on hand for really bad reactions. After I found out about crushed under the tongue method I use that. Not the best taste, but beats ending up in the ER.

(17,038 posts)I switched to it from skim milk because of carbs. I use it to make gravy, custard, have on my cereal.
If I remember correctly, the herbs you mentioned are all from the mint family.
My husband was sensitive to black pepper. I used a little hot sauce in chili and he did okay.
Maybe you can use almond flavor as a sub for vanilla.
I see a lot of plant based foods available. Hope you find things you like. and even better, your allergies improve.

(646 posts)They used to think that they needed to that but, per my doc,
it's not true anymore. I tested ok to eat peppermint.
The only nightshade the blood work came back on
was the cayenne.
The biggest thing was dairy, and I ate a lot of it.
I hadn't had any anaphylaxis. I'm not lactose (sugar) intolerant. I'm allergic to all the proteins, and especially the aged cheeses.
Doctor thinks I can probably add butter back after I detox from dairy altogether.
I'll be doing the elimination diet thing before I add stuff back in.

(646 posts)Getting breakfast sausage without sage will likely be pretty impossible eating out.
I can make my own spice mix at home, I guess.

(17,038 posts)Got tired of paying so much for something that was half fat. I looked at the ingredients on the heat and serve banquet sausage and came up with a pretty good mix.
Maybe you can, too. I just googled for a list of sage substitutes, maybe you'll find something you like and doesn't bother you!
