Stands in the bathroom doorway with her comfort toy in her mouth (a small, fuzzy windup chicken), and lets out howls of anxiety.

So I talk to her about it first. That means turning on the shower and telling the cat before I get in, "It's ok." She understands "ok" from other contexts. I point to myself and then to the shower, then, "It's ok." Seems to calm her down.

We once had an orange cat that would sneak around corners and then jump out on his hind legs and attack our ankles. My girlfriend at the time (wife later) was so scared of the cat she’d make me go in first and find him and put him in another room when we were getting ready to go in the house. He was ruining her stockings.
