Folk singing legend Arlo Guthrie had a sentimental reunion on Thanksgiving Day with Alice Pelkey Brock, the woman who was the inspiration behind the singers 1967 spoken-word anti-war song about littering, Alices Restaurant (also known as Alices Restaurant Massacree). The song also led to a 1969 movie of the same name directed by Arthur Penn that starred Guthrie, Patricia Quinn, and James Broderick and had a cameo role by Brock, now 81.
Thursdays dinner was held at the Massachusetts home of Guthries friend, Rick Robbins, The Berkshire Eagle reported. Robbins also figured prominently in the November 1965 adventure that eventually became Guthries opus, which ran for nearly 18 1/2 minutes. Even though they have remained friends and have kept in touch, it marked the first time the trio enjoyed Thanksgiving together since 1965, according to the newspaper.
Obanhein, referred to as Officer Obie in Guthries song, played himself in the movie, according to IMDb.com. Guthrie was reunited with the police officer during the filming of the movie.
He said to me, Well, if you hippies can get up at 4 a.m. to do this movie, you cant be all bad, Guthrie said during a 2015 concert stop, according to The Eagle. And we started talking and we eventually became good friends.
