The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI could use some good wishes!
Having my first cataract surgery tomorrow, and I'm just a little bit nervous. Not severely, just a little. I think it's perfectly normal and even sensible to be a little bit nervous about any surgery (none are without risks, after all), but I would appreciate any good luck wishes anyone feel like posting.
I have to be at the hospital at 7 am, so I really should be sleeping, but I am WIDE awake, so I'll probably just stay up and catch up on my sleep later.
I've never asked for anything like this before, and it feels a little weird, to be honest. But I've seen how great the DU crowd is about things like this, so I figure, why not!
Thanks in advance!

(80,693 posts)One thing I've learned about eye ailments is that at least most of them aren't painful. Thank goodness! Cataracts are about the only eye issue I actually have NOT had.
Hope it goes well for you, ShazzieB. Please keep us posted.

(130,126 posts)Cataract surgery really is 'no big deal,' tho those of us who haven't endured much surgery don't realize it (until after.)

(10,110 posts)They did some other stuff for astigmatism.
They offered me a sedative. I passed.
My blood pressure peaked at 125.
I like to think of a serene place - like kicking back in a canoe on a calm lake - just floating on a gorgeous summer day. Easy deep breaths. If you have time, check out relaxation techniques - try to find one that might work for you or get your head around something to try.
They're typically very good at this surgery. Very high success rate.
Don't hesitate to ask questions. Improved understanding can reduce fear. The docs have seen it all.
All the best

(16,820 posts)Just think about how much better cataract surgery is now compared to 40-50 years ago. My grandmother had that surgery in the late 70s, and she was nearly blind for a while afterward. I think back then they would have to take the eyeball out to remove the cataracts and then put it back in. Patients had to wear patches over their eyes for a while to keep out the sunlight. It was a serious surgery. Nowadays removing cataracts is pretty routine and doesn't take much time to recover, at least not compared to the old days. You're going to be fine. If you start getting anxious, try some deep breathing. It always calms me down when I do that.

(202,970 posts)I can remember her lying still with patches over her eyes and, compared to today, she had to be very careful afterwards...

(4,437 posts)Won't it be nice to see? Everyone I know that's had it done has been very happy. It's pretty fast, too. Try to at least rest. Sometimes slowing your breathing helps.

(14,235 posts)Scared to death. I mean, it's your eyes, right? But they gave me some happy drugs and I was soon in lala land. Next thing I knew I was awake and all was well. You will do great. Let us know how it went.

(12,360 posts)I was wide awake but sedated and it seemed to go very quick. The weird part was after they removed the lens with a laser I was wheeled into another room to insert the implant and I could actually see out of the eye with no lens but it was blurry. No pain at all. The second one seemed to take longer but I was told that's because the sedative made me forget most of the first operation but because the second one repeated the same sensations more was retained in memory. The last question I asked was whether the implant was made with glass because I had this sudden worry that I might someday attend an opera and someone would hit one of those glass-shattering high notes. I was told the implants are made from a high-tech composite that would outlast me.
You'll do fine and it will be over before you know it.

(14,893 posts)everything looked afterward He said his color perception had faded so gradually over the years that he wasn't even aware of it until it was suddenly restored by the surgery. I'm sending up a prayer and good wishes for your surgical team and for you...I feel confident that you will breeze through it and be pleased with the outcome!

(569 posts)I am allergic to any form of sedation/narcotic and had them done awake with drops only and sailed thru both. It is so easy and how you will be able to see afterwards is so worth it. You will do great 🙂

(791 posts)thoughts for success and quick and complete healing to you.
I will be 82 in a couple of weeks and will be having the same surgery on both eyes soon.
If the procedure were to be concerned about that would be common knowledge in the public. I think you will be fine. Breath. Meditate if you can. Best to you.
A poem for you - You will see in 23.

Look forward to how great it will be to see DU more clearly after your procedure.

(5,190 posts)Cataract surgery is not painful nor invasive. You'll be given a relaxing med and not be out out totally, just in a twilight sleep. You'll be fine quickly and home in a few hours. Just be sure to use eye drops prescribed. Good luck!

(16,690 posts)Surgery is very quick, painless. Be sure to follow up. Most drs. want to see you the next day, and then 3 days after that, to be sure all is well. Stay in touch with the dr. as often as you want to. Good luck!
