I'm wondering if the psychological studies that show conservatives in general are lacking in empathy might have some bearing on their dislike of those that do.

This seems almost a more physiological/neurological problem than a political one. It's been said that the lack of the mirror empathy that normal beings (humans and other species) have that this leads to estrangement, inability to relate to others that are "different".
