As a child of the 60's I cannot tell you how weird it was buying pot legally.
The "menu" had pot infused candy, drinks and other goodies.
It was surreal.

(13,679 posts)What made it worse was I had a mad scientist grower buddy in Oregon. He'd give me some and I'd share it around with my buddies and they said it was killer, but I couldn't have any.
Just about when I retired, he did as well from the growing business. I make my own edibles. You can make better than they sell for a fraction of the cost.

(147 posts)Most of the edibles I bought don't do much for me, but I've heard stories about potent homemade edibles.

little more. Take 7 grams and bake it at about 240 for an hour. Then grind it up finely.
Have one cup of water and one cup of butter melted and just simmering and add the weed to it. Let it simmer like that until you've steamed off almost all of the water. Once it's down to a tiny bit more than a cup, strain the weed out and you have a cup of cannabutter to use for whatever you like.
Cannabutter is kind of skanky, so you want to use it in something that has a lot of flavor. Chocolate muffins and peanut butter cookies are my favorite.
That quarter ounce of weed makes two dozen of my muffins. Each are about as potent as three of the candies you can buy, so for about $10 bucks at the most equals 72 of those. The cheapest I found in the shops were $15 for ten I think.

(7,440 posts)It's difficult to ascertain the potency of edibles when home-made. When it's too potent, it can immobilize you for up to 2 hours. While being immobilized might be attractive to some, it's not for me. If you don't want to lose the time, try another delivery method.
I'd much rather vape the dry herb or smoke it in a bubbler. The dose is much easier to manipulate.
If you can grow the stuff, it's a whole lot cheaper than buying it in a retail store. Doing it right means high potency. No skimping on soil, plant food, or environmental conditions. Give the plants the best of conditions to grow and mature, and you'll be handsomely rewarded. Get good sativa strains and don't worry about the maturity timelines. Pay more attention to the look of the trichomes than the length of time for "maturity." I always grow too much for personal consumption and give the rest away (I don't sell.). That way, I get good feedback about the potency from others, who consistently tell me that the potency is better than store-bought.
brewens
(13,679 posts)problem for the reason you stated. Then I still tell them to start out with half and let it go for a good hour or so before they finish it.
Mine are consistent potency for sure. My three best buddies and I all confirm that one is just about as strong as three candies, so right about 30 mg THC.
The cookie recipes are a little different. I intentionally make those weaker because I like to eat about three cookies with my coffee.

(28,824 posts)i went to a store with my son and he bought some edibles. I ate one that night and wouldn't leave the hotel room because I felt like I'd be staggering around. My other son told me I should have only done half. But I didn't enjoy the experience, so I'll probably not do any pot again until/unless I end up with an illness causing chronic pain. I'll have to get it smuggled to me here in NC, at least so far.
i moved here from CA in 2007, and on another visit back went to a concert with friends to see Etana. Outside she lit up a joint and I was like scandalized until i remembered, oh it's legal here. It is hard to get used to it being 100% legal. Wish it was across all the states.

(7,440 posts)In the last several years, I grow my own and find that I no longer need to save the scraps. Growing a few plants (the max is 4 in Oregon. I'm growing 2.) yields way more than enough for each growing season. If legislatures in "illegal states" are smart, they'll look at the data in "legal states" and conclude that legal pot has NO EFFECT on the functioning of official or private business. Legal pot has no effect on absences from work, car accident rates, victim or non-victim crimes, or general individual productivity. AND, it's a lucrative and harmless way to raise public revenue through taxes. We are experiencing a lot of public works improvements over the past several years from taxes collected from pot sales.

(34,142 posts)but, as you know, Kansas will hold out for at least another 10-20 years proudly claiming that we are the only sober state. I do not know why I still have the stuff. I have a condition that would respond well to it so I used it a few times but it did not help so...still sitting sadly somewhere in my house, I have forgotten where. Maybe my kids will get a kick out of that once I am gone. It is easy to get here however or at least my old providers are still living and still selling. At least it is not the old ditch weed we had to use in the way back. Do you remember drying it out on the radiator of your car? Good grief................................

(67,112 posts)and we thought it would last forever. Ha, I do remember baking banana peels in the oven once, because someone said if you smoke them you'll get high. Well, that didn't work out too well. We're leaving FL now, it's getting pretty crazy down here ... moving up north someplace and pot is legal there in a number of places. I have a condition too that it might help. I hope you are doing well, it's great hearing from you.
MuseRider
(34,142 posts)but did not want to ask. It sounds like you left a bad situation for a good situation that turned bad. Good luck with the next.
It is still typical Kansas except every now and then I get a feeling that things are changing then BLAM! It seems the people here cannot see that if you vote for something progressive or correct and kind (the abortion vote) you are screwing yourself by voting for the assholes that put us in that position in the first place. It boggles the mind. I hear a lot of murmurs that people are getting a little fed up with the mean positions held by those very people they voted for. This Trans garbage they are legislating is not going over as well as they thought it would, at least that is what I am hearing. We will see.
My farm is here, I have always been here. My ancestors were here and cleared the slavers out so I will stay. AND I am old. I will stay and fight until they kick me out or my ashes fly in the Kansas breeze.
GOOD LUCK wherever you go.

(10,152 posts)It is actually quite glorious for any older folks that knew what it was like in the old days. And no more horrible Mexi Brown. It is ALL high quality, manicured perfection.
The joints are rolled in a cone shape and have a hamper at the tip, so no need for a clip or a finger burn.
Wait til you see that they sell hash also. Lebanese or Moroccan. Its mind blowing.
I have a vape pen which is a extremely convenient. My current cartridge is a Cantaloupe, a sativa oil that is ~75% THC. Some catridges are near pure THC oil - which is way too heavy for an older guy like me.
When I buy a J I usually buy what is called a Dog Walker. Kind of a replacement for the pinners I used to roll for personal use. $3.00 1/2 gram.
You can buy Js in packs/tins also.
Again, the whole thing is mind blowing.

(26,039 posts)I broke a 23-year fast last year. Since then, Ive visited dispensaries in 5 different states. Ironically, I cant buy prerolls in my own state of current residence, due to medical marijuana law stating that flower or leaf must be vaped - not smoked. Rant over. Tis but a minor impediment, since flower is readily available. Just vape it. Dont smoke it. Gotcha. Nod nod wink wink say no more.
It is amazing to an old space cadet such as myself to walk into a business establishment and purchase cannabis from a menu. I missed out during the 60s but started playing catch-up shortly afterward. My bona fides run deep. In 1975 I ran with some of this nations most brilliant university students, who were pioneering extraction methods. In retrospect, its surprising we didnt cauterize our lungs.
I gave it all up all those years ago due to concerns over random testing at work. I always had it in mind to start consuming again after retirement, but at the rate Im going, that may not happen completely for a few more years. While on vacation in a state with recreational cannabis, I had a discussion with my wife, who is an absolute cannabis virgin, about starting again. It was never an issue between us in the past, and she approved.
My first purchase was a few prerolls and a few bags of gummies, which I had intended as an introduction for my wife. I decided against that and ended up eating all the gummies myself. Not all at once, mind you. Ive since then gotten CBD oil for her to use, and results are good.
We went to a remote location in a state park, where I lit up a joint and took a couple hits. Instantly, I was transported to a time in my youth when the experience was new. I even had a few seconds of encroaching paranoia, and I was thankful for knowing that this feeling would pass. My eyes did get red AF though.

(7,440 posts)not necessarily containing cannabis. The vaping in this sense refers to tobacco smoking substitutes that coat the interior of the lungs with petrochemicals.
Vaping dry herb leaves out BURNING of the flowers. There's no "burning marijuana" smell, no irritation to the lungs or throat. And the vaped pot is just as potent.
The above is my educated opinion. I'm not an expert. Read research and other materials to form your own opinion.

(9,808 posts)Michigans been legal for awhile now some of the the experiences are awesome.
I grew stealthy for a great while (before legalized), closet in a grow tent, half paranoid when plants were budding cuz of the smell, couldnt talk about growing unless you were online or a very trusted friend.
Now 15 years after that start
Taught my neighbor how to grow
Autoflower cannabis make it very easy, no paranoia, buying high potency seeds are no problem, we share pot over the fence. We can smoke to our hearts content outside in our yards dont have to hide, most people on the block grow and share the bounty.
Cannabis in Michigan is the least expensive place to buy. In Bay City I think there are more dispensaries than Starbucks. 15% off when you have a MMC (medical marijauna card) and some dispos cover your taxes.
Should be legal across the country.

(13,679 posts)is about four miles away. The word is our cops mostly just confiscate weed unless you're doing something else illegal. Usually, it's a DUI that gets them busted. That was kind of always the way it was around here. It's an almost all white area, so we don't see the kind of random harassment and searches minorities are subject to elsewhere. Almost everyone I know personally that got busted for weed was driving drunk and had it on them.

(11,169 posts)I take gummies for sleep and vape for relaxation. Vaping doesnt give me that completely useless feeling I had when I was taking bong hits in my younger days, but still makes me relaxed.
Yesterday I was able to get a two-month supply of gummies and vapes for $100. I order online and pretty much just walk in and pick up. I watch the deals and only buy when they are BOGO. Which tends to be every other weekend. But I remember paying $40 a week for ditch weed in the 90s. And the one dispensary I visit takes debit cards now.

(65,466 posts)My wife & I have had med pot cards for going on 5 years now. It's legal for everyone here now, but the med card eliminates the service fee & state sales tax. Pays for itself in 5 months, and only needs to be renewed every 3 years.
Anyway, last weekend I bought a whole ounce of ground flower, Sativa, and 27.2% THC, for $148!!!
Before the cultivators caught up to demand (2 years or more ago) that same stuff would have been $90 per quarter ounce.
We're now paying $100 less for unknown quality & lineage than we did 10 years ago.
Just like when bad liquor cost twice as much because of the roaring success of Prohibition.

(9,581 posts)I was talking to someone about getting a "lid" the other day, and they had no clue what that meant. A lid was an ounce, give or take, but you could tell by looking at the baggie it was in whether or not it was a good deal. Last Mother's Day, my son got me some pot, but I had to eat it because of lung issues, and when you don't know how strong something is or isn't, you have to be really careful. I'm 75 and I really don't want to be so fucked up that I risk falling.
Have to admit, though, I miss my drugs. Or at least the memory of them. I'm in KY and I sure wish cannabis in some form was legal here. And wish that Quaaludes hadn't gone away, but it was probably for the best. Loved that shit. Now it's just blood thinners and blood pressure meds. Well, there is alcohol, but that's really not an acceptable substitute.
