Hi All....
I'm a permanent substitute teacher (by choice, I LOVE IT).....
There is NO work during the summer because the summer school that students need to attend are run by the regular teachers.
Also, the camps and outdoor activity jobs go to the teacher aides, paraprofessionals, etc. And, I can't work outdoors in the heat because I have Fibromyalgia.
I worked for the County of Los Angeles last summer (as an in-home health provider) but it was a mess (I won't go into details).
I'd love to Nanny/babysit, help elderly people, etc. I can't do retail/fast food because I have too many food allergies and retail is a major trigger for me.
Right now I need ideas (no matter how off the wall)!
Thanks to all

(51,093 posts)works with a few elderly people in the area. I think she has 4 on her roster right now. She drives them to doc appointments, grocery shops, checks in daily. I think she also might cook them a few meals per week. All for a flat monthly fee. She got her clients by putting a flyer in the laundry rooms of the neighboring apartment buildings.

(5,812 posts)There is a bulletin board in the clubhouse where people post fliers. Here are some ideas:
1. Tutor -- grandparent special for a grandchild -- and list your subject areas.
2. Pet care -- will help wash, groom, walk, the dog.
3. Reading -- will read books to someone with vision problems.
4. Personal shopper -- not groceries, but help with RXs, grooming products, etc.
5. Internet tutor -- are you good with computers?
6. Secretarial work -- write letters, fill out forms, etc.
7. House washer -- get a power washer, mobile homes and patios need to be washed down.
8. Walker -- some seniors love to walk, but need someone with them to do this.
9. Light housekeeping -- a special for organizing drawers, cupboards, closets and light laundry.
10. Add to anything above -- call me if you have a special task that you need help with.
Hope this helps! Put your list where I live and I might call you -- my dog needs a bath!

(29,739 posts)are in desperate need of personal care assistants. Look them up. You can work as many or as few hours as you choose. To become certified, you need to jump some hoops, but many are in such need, they will help you complete the course and often pay you for it.

(4,927 posts)There is a need for Personal Support Workers (PSWs)/Personal Care Workers (PCWs) for high school/young adults with learning disabilities. In the summer, not being in school leaves them vulnerable. The PSWs take them shopping, to entertainment, events, help them cook, etc.
I will probably be doing that this summer myself.
I'm also a substitute in Special Ed. Also loving it, but have had more respiratory viruses since starting as a sub than I'm used to.
Good luck and keep us informed.

(17,150 posts)House-sitting. I don't ask for pay, but take care of my grand dogs, and different neighbors' dogs, cats and chickens. We are in a small town, and there aren't a lot of professionals. If you're trustworthy, good with animals, reliable, it is easy to find work and get a customer base.
You can check online and see if you'd qualify for ESL instructions, maybe other coursework. Check any company before you hire.
I'm retired now, but when I was just out of h.s., I got signed up with a temp service and got a good paying job for the whole summer before I went to college.
Here is my far out off-the-wall idea: If you are familiar with water pumps and cisterns, you could look into house-sitting in Bermuda. They rely on rain run-off and the houses are built over cisterns. You have to know how to monitor the water levels, switch pumps from one cistern to another. (that caught our attention when we visited. We learned how on our farm, and figured we could do it in Bermuda!)
Good luck on your job search. Seems like you should be able to find a summer job as low as unemployment is.
