Budapest to Frankfurt, change planes to Chicago and be home tonight. Lufthansa delayed first flight 2 hours so missed connection to ORD. They put me up at a Holiday Inn Express 22 km from airport.
Next flight is at 10AM tomorrow.

(24,147 posts)About 20 years ago, when my husband was still flying for United, we got passes to Germany. Easy peasy. Trying to get home was an entirely different story. We spent 3 DAYS in the Frankfort airport, waiting for standby seats to become available.
We stayed in a different hotel each night. The first was a B&B in Assmanhausen that was enthusiastically recommend by our next door neighbor, who had stayed there many times. At one time, it had been a railroad station. What he neglected to mention was that although the trains no longer stopped there, they ran by every 20-30minutes, all night long.. Not much sleep that night.
The 2nd hotel was nearer to the airport, a small private hotel, therefore not air conditioned. It was August. It was hot. The hotel was hosting a couple os very loud bachelor parties. Keeping the windows closed made it too hot to sleep, and keeping them open made it too noisy to sleep.
The 3rd night, we threw economy to the winds and took a room at the airport Marriott. It felt positively luxurious.
In 3 days, only 5 people got out on standby. We struck up a friendship with a family from California. The husband/father was in admin at United and had 30 years seniority. Even he couldnt get a seat. We ended up having to buy tickets back to Chicago on another airline because United was so oversold. They were offering alternative tickets and cash to people to give up their seats. Our 2 sons and I got tickets tickets on either Continental or Delta, and my husband finally got a jump seat on a different flight.

(5,969 posts)if the delay was due to the airline's fault but I'm not sure whether the EU regulations fit your case.

(51,501 posts)There were only 3 restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, so I stopped at the first one I came to...it was very good, but could have fed 2 or 3.
Got back home 2PM on Friday.
