in September. It was finally diagnosed via MRI in April and I got a cortisone injection earlier this month before my trip to the Balkans. Two days after the shot, all the pain and most of the swelling vanished. I was good until last Tuesday when I walked a good deal. Then spent 30 hours flying home. My knee has been extremely painful and swollen the last few days. The orthopedic doctor gave me meloxicam for inflammation.
Should I try to get another injection? How often can I have them? What did you do to overcome the pain and stiffness?
P.S. I'm 75.

(12,511 posts)Tore his meniscus during a cuddle session I was lying next to him when it happened. I heard a god awful crunchy like noise and I said wtf was that?
He said in a calm matter of fact voice I think I just tore my meniscus. He sat there quiet for a minute Then he started howling in pain and I called 911.

We thought my daughter might have torn something (her thumb,) but appears only a strain or sprain.)

(2,772 posts)I tore mine on the right knee, but around to the inside toward the back.
Rather than opt for the surgery the orthopedist advised as my best option, I chose to wait and see. I did a one-to-one consult with my yoga teacher who advised me to massage the knee cap and area around it by pushing the skin and tissue towards the knee cap gently. And also be careful during my yoga practice and other activities to protect the knee.
Within 3-4 months the knee had healed and I have had no trouble with it.

At first it was very painful and I even briefly tried using a cane. The doctor ordered physical therapy with surgery as a more drastic option.
I didnt do either one. Instead I kept mobile and noticed that my knee felt literally misaligned and unstable when I wore flatter shoes. I bought Scholls orthotic inserts for those shoes and it immediately realigned my foot and knee eliminating the pain altogether except for the occasional misstep.
After wearing them for a few months my knee is back to normal. That was more than five years ago.

(46,320 posts)Worst pain I've experienced in my life.
Physical therapy (not pharmaceuticals) really made the difference. Iced the knee for 30 minutes, then electical stimulation of the same area to reduce the fluid build-up which was the primary source of the pain.
I was elated when I could stand for 30 minutes with minimal pain and no fear of collapse.
That was 20 years ago this year and no pain and no problems.

It also, as it did with you, eliminates the pain so you overuse the injured area and risk injuring it further.
Talk to the doc about a repair. They're mostly done with a scope these days.

(23,203 posts)He had surgery and was walking the same day and was at work 2 days later where he was on his feet most of the day. It's a great surgery, fixes the pain quickly with very little down time.
