(278 posts)For me, The Stones are great for completely different reasons, and were at their best when they didnt copy whatever The Beatles had just introduced (sitar, strings, etc.) in that era. Ultimately, they didnt need to.
Pre-Revolver Beatles were OK and definitely hinted at what they would become, but without George Martin, Brian Epstein, Geoff Emerick and many others who furthered their creative development, they mightve ended up having no more impact than Hermans Hermits.
Abbey Road was a perfect ending to the most influential rock-n-roll band in history. And Sgt Pepper was early proof that they were capable of that level of musical achievement.

(3,374 posts)done for decades. The Beatles, I love them too, but their songs are more top 40 while the Stones rock and blues rhythms never get old for me.
Gimme Shelter. I still get goose bumps when Mary Clayton sings, and I always will!

(24,103 posts)but music-wise the Beatles have an edge. I mean going from playing Chuck Berry songs in bars to Sgt. Pepper in five years or so is an amazing transition. The Stones have remade themselves many times also, even had some Disco cred with Miss You, but that's over 60 years.

(3,850 posts)I respect the Stones as people, as celebrities, and as old-time rockers. But don't actually like the music.
