I've never been a DeadHead but I really respect their fierce independence
and commitment to what THEY view as music.
.
The only show I went to? The indoor bicycle track of the Munich Olympic
Stadium complex in 1973 or -4. Did the wrong drugs (hash and red wine),
so I was napping probably 20 minutes into the show.
.
Just BEFORE the show, I went out to the concourse where all the food
vendors were. Nobody else out there, except this wild-haired American
guy at the bratwurst stand to which I was coincidentally headed. He had
3 bratwurst sandwiches on Kaiser rolls laid out open-faced along the inside
of his arm and was applying copious amounts of mustard to them.
.
Staring at me with eyes as wild as his hair, he shouted enthusiastically,
"These things are GREAT!!!"
.
.
.
It wasn't 'til 40 minutes later or so, when I saw him onstage, that I realized
that I had just met Jerry.

...in all seriousness, he had a sort of childlike curiosity and sense of wonder about everything in his world. Unfortunately, he chose to couple that with an equal enthusiasm for heroin. The fact that he died in a rehab center remains one of the greatest tragedies of my lifetime. He should have been allowed passage to the other side, where he'd still be playing today, and still making people ask "Where the hell did THAT come from?"

I miss many friends from all over I shared so many shows with.
Heavy sigh.

MFM, I have heard so many similar stories, I think that might have been typical Jerry behavior.
