(23,236 posts)(technically it was performed by Jefferson Airplane--they didn't graduate to starship flight til the 70s. minor point, but I'm kinda a jerk about such things.....)

(19,768 posts)It was about Alice in Wonderland, and it was Jefferson Airplane. I know this. Don't know what I was thinking.
I just had that line in my head, "when men on the chessboard, get up and tell you where to go..."

(23,236 posts)I could only think about "And the White Knight talking backwards, and the Red Queen's 'off with her head'."
maybe we need to eat some kind of mushroom and give it try

(56,912 posts)It was christmas in prison
And the food was real good
We had turkey and pistols
Carved out of wood
And I dream of her always
Even when I don't dream
Her name's on my tongue
And her blood's in my stream.
Wait awhile eternity
Old mother nature's got nothing on me
Come to me
Run to me
Come to me, now
We're rolling
My sweetheart
We're flowing
By god!
She reminds me of a chess game
With someone I admire
Or a picnic in the rain
After a prairie fire
Her heart is as big
As this whole goddamn jail
And she's sweeter than saccharine
At a drug store sale.
The search light in the big yard
Swings round with the gun
And spotlights the snowflakes
Like the dust in the sun
It's christmas in prison
There'll be music tonight
I'll probably get homesick
I love you. goodnight.
this song might also work in the other thread about greatest religious song

(838 posts)I don't want to calculate every line of a mate in eight
I don't want to sit and stare and get control of an empty square
I don't want to study and remember every single move that was ever made
If I'm going to work that hard, I want to get paid!
I've got a job, I do it well - Five days a week, I go through hell
I use my back, I use my brain, if I worked any more I'd go insane
So when I sit down to play, I want a little relaxation
You see, I'm winning just 'cause I'm playing, and when I lose there's no frustration
I don't want to calculate etc.
I've got what you call an attacking style, I know that a miss is as good as a mile
I throw my pieces at the other fellow's king, bishops and pawns and everything (breaking glass sound effects
Most of the time I go down in flames, but every little once in awhile
It all works out and the game is mine, and I smile a crooked smile
'Cause then I feel like a conquering hero, a regular Don Quixote*
Or St. George jumping a dragon, and getting it by the throat
But I don't rest on my laurels, no I only win one in ten
I just set up the pieces and I go for the dragon again
I don't want to calculate etc.
Show me the money, sonny!
I want to get paid. .....
* Whoever wrote it mangled the pronunciation, presumably intentionally, to make it rhyme... don't shoot the messenger!

(12,336 posts)Ok it was named after the founder, Leonard Chess, but it was called Chess Records and they recorded some of the greatest music in the history of mankind. Artists such as McKinley Morganfield, Chester Burnett, Rice Miller, and Charles Edward Anderson Berry recorded on the label.
Btw, in case anyone doesn't know who any of the above artists are, or were, shame on you. They were better known as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson number 2, and of course, the Godfather of all Rock and Roll everywhere, Chuck Berry.
