I've been posting here on DU off and on for a number of years but it has been very sporadic. Recently I've been posting more though, mostly about my emotional issues but also about politics and other 'lighter' issues. Anyway I thought a fun way to semi introduce myself would be to just post an ask me anything post The basic facts. I'm 30, live in Vancouver Canada, am of 1/2 Chinese 1/2 White racial mix. Feel free to ask me ANYTHING!

(149,693 posts)I've been to Vancouver, and I love it! How lucky for you to live there. The gorgeous bay, the surrounding mountains, a lovely mild climate...
Here's my question:
How do you stand so much beauty?
Locut0s
(6,154 posts)especially of your weather! 6 months a year of overcast and rain get's awfully tiring at times. But yes you are right we are very blessed here. When it's the backdrop of your life though you're spoiled and don't notice it all the time. On particularly beautiful days though you can't help but stop and "smell the roses"
This last image is particularly iconic and printed often but it's REALLY out of date. I think it's from the late 80s. All that land in the foreground has been now developed into expensive high rise residential towers.

(149,693 posts)We do tend to have sunnier weather, but some days are hot and humid.
But often we have stunning clear skies, with Catalina Island off the coast, floating, shimmering above a layer of fog.....incredible!
I too feel blessed.

(6,154 posts)I don't care for nor watch hockey almost ever and know next to nothing of the game. The exception was the Canada / US 2010 winter Olympics gold medal match. That was special, having the game in our home town and winning the gold against the US. The city went fucking CRAZY!!! Never seen so many Canadian flags nor that much red and white in my life!

(6,154 posts)Monthly average rainfall
Monthly average temp, usually this would be in Celsius for us but I found this graph in Fahrenheit:
On average 1928 hours of sunshine per year:

(10,558 posts)so off I go looking for links when I discover this one which shows that SFU has a veritable cornucopia of films to boast about.
http://students.sfu.ca/filming.html
More importantly thanks to YOU Locut0s, I just discovered in that link that HALO 4 was filmed there!
http://students.sfu.ca/filming/halo.html
OMG OMG OMG! My heart is going pitter patter with all the excitement! I would argue that there is no bigger fan (here) of HALO than yours truly! I lay the blame for this discovery at your feet sir. I am now happily in your debt.

(21,852 posts)When I lived in Seattle, I used to visit Vancouver about once a year. I always went to Granville and checked out the Market and the art galleries.
Is that something only tourists do?
Locut0s
(6,154 posts)haunt. It's also where the Emile Carr University of Art and Design is located, a very well respected art school. So the island is chock full of artists and art students. But if you aren't into the arts that much then you aren't likely to go there much as a local. It's basically tourists and art nuts

(6,154 posts)UBC would be the cream of the crop, very well respected even world wide.
SFU would probably come next.
I'm currently going to BCIT which is a well respected polytechnic institute/university. Degrees from trade to Computer Science (which is what I'm taking) and everything in between and beyond.
Cost of education is also cheaper than in the US on average I believe.

It would make their late grandmother happy. She was from Quebec. (Although, travelling from Maine to Vancouver to visit would be quite the jaunt. LOL)

(6,154 posts)Annual tuition fees for various colleges and universities for Canadian residents:
http://www.aved.gov.bc.ca/tuition/welcome.htm
The average seems to be about $3000 per year give or take depending on the institution.
It's unfortunately a LOT more for international students. I don't have the numbers but my father is a professor at a local college and he says it's in the 4-5x range. Ouch
How do these numbers compare to tuition in the states? I'm curious.
BTW lots of pretty Canadian girls here in Vancouver
GreenPartyVoter
(72,381 posts)annual tuition for in-state students is $8,800, for New England students it's $13,200, and for out of state it's $18,800. Room & board is $9,548. So by staying at home they can save $20K or more. (Assuming things cost more 4 to 6 years from now.)
Unfortunately, unless they plan on becoming Merchant Marines like their great grandfather, they will probably need to find another school for their major coursework. The university about 90 minutes from here could be a do-able commute if they don't have very early and very late classes. My parents both got their Masters there as commuters.
This is what it would cost a Canadian resident in tuition to attend that school: http://umaine.edu/bursar/tuition-and-fees/fall-2012-spring-2013-canadian-resident-tuition-and-fees/
Locut0s
(6,154 posts)Here you need about 120 credits on average to get an undergraduate degree. If my math is right that's like ~$50,000 or so for a degree for a Canadian! 0_o
Although now that I think about it international students here are probably paying something in the $44,000 range so it's not that much better.
But the fact that in-state students pay $8,800/yr seems crazy to me. A full 4 year degree here should cost in the $12-15,000 range for provincial residents/citizens.

But, it's heavy (as in dense) snow and no one has snow tires. It's also so rare people forget how to drive in it. No snow plows either. Also lots of hills and very narrow streets with cars parked on either side.
Three days and it was gone. Life got back to normal again.

(6,154 posts)My father had a close call some years back and had to have a pacemaker installed, would have cost him a fortune in the states, cost nothing here. Meds aren't paid for usually which CAN be an issue at times. However one of my psychiatrists got me on a special government plan, for those with low or no income, which paid for all of my psychiatric medication (for depression and anxiety) 100% which saves me HUNDREDS of dollars a year Other things not covered which may or may not be covered under plans in some other countries include dental coverage, optometrist, some specialists that might fall under "elective" health care. Most of these and medication will be covered fairly well under any good extended healthcare plan offered by most employers. The right wing in the US love to highlight our long wait times when talking about Canadian health care. This is largely blown out of proportion but it's not a non issue. If your condition is serious or life threatening you don't have a thing to worry about. 90% of the time you don't for other things either. But there are things that fall between the cracks that are unfortunate. Things like chronic conditions that aren't life threatening but may require surgery or other resources used to treat more serious conditions may be affected by wait times to some degree.

Small house?
Rent vs. own?
My husband and I were joking yesterday we'd like to live there (well, he prefers Helsinki, but my entire family is in California and Idaho, so I love and miss the Pacific!)
Locut0s
(6,154 posts)That's to own a house anywhere within about 15-20mins driving distance of downtown. If you move farther afield prices drop. Renting is expensive too but I don't know the exact prices. I know that it's pretty hard to find anything at all for less than $800-$1000/mnth and a lot of places are more than that.
I'm 30 and still live with my parents partly because of this. Mostly due to my anxiety/depression and other life issues though.

(6,154 posts)though they are still higher than the average in the US. And personally I couldn't live anywhere else in Canada but here Though I hear the maritimes are beautiful too. Prices here in Vancouver have dropped about 10% or more in the last year. The bubble is starting to give I think though high international demand may keep it from actually bursting. You can live on Vancouver Island and elsewhere along the coast for a bit less, though again demand for these properties as vacation homes keep prices pretty high.
