The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsBest birthday gift! I turn 59 tomorrow.
My 18 year old kiddo got his private pilots license last week. For my birthday, he said he would take me for a flight
wherever I wanted to go. FYI, his training plane is a Cessna 152. A very tiny plane so we stayed somewhat close to home. I asked him to take me north of where we live to the Mission Mountains
the gateway to Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park.
Our little plane had to get a jumpstart because it was so cold this morning
but it got better from there.
Heres a little of what we saw
and yes, its winter here already:
It was such a good day.

(23,352 posts)Owen has been flying it since January of this year. Im 52 and it was a tight fit with a 6 boy next to me. He graduates into a Cessna 172 to begin instrument training next week. Ill be happy to have a little more hardware around him and me.
Do you have all this snow on your side of the divide? Holy hell.

(86,837 posts)We've got plenty of snow. It started snowing Tuesday night and didn't stop until this morning. Looks like we got about a foot in all. It'll be gone by the end of the week. Supposed to be int the 50s mid week, that's when I'll finally remove the rest of my porch plants that I just couldn't yank up so I let them freeze to death.
It takes me a couple weeks to get used to the cold, this didn't let me have that transition time to get used to it. Should be an interesting winter.

(32,116 posts)What a fabulous birthday gift!! You must have been beaming with pride the whole flight! Really
you have one heck of a wonderful kiddo. Hats off to him and hats off to raising good sons! I just cant imagine that beautiful scenery and being up so high.
What an experience! TY so much for sharing!

(23,352 posts)I thought Id be so nervous
but I wasnt. He was very competent. I had my Relief Band on for motion sickness but the air was so still I dont think I needed it. Owen had never seen the Missions up as close as were and he was impressed. We made a plan to fly over them next summer when hes in the Cessna 172
a four seater with a little more room. It was an honor to be his first passenger.

(8,329 posts)A very happy (belated) birthday to you. Nice photos.
I had a bd a couple of weeks ago but didn't go anywhere. Which was fine by me. I did talk to my son, though, for half an hour. So that was the best bd present I could ask for.
MontanaMama
(23,352 posts)Yes. The gift of time with our kiddos is the best thing ever. I was thrilled when Owen asked me to fly with him and I feel honored to be his first passenger. Im choked up even thinking about it.
