Pretty cool. They're actually still quite common hear, just rarely seen or heard.

(47,675 posts)The flickers had a clutch! There are at least four chicks, but they're flying now and mostly hanging out around our garden (good eats). I didn't even know we had a mating pair until I saw the chicks in the air. My wife's got a killer pair of binoculars and damn are those things cute. I know they'll move on soon, but hopefully the parents will hang around and treat us again next year.

(6,011 posts)One late afternoon I was at the park down the street throwing a frisbee for my dog at the outdoor amphitheater and a flock of about a dozen large birds landed on the grass expanse below the rise we were standing on.
The sun was low and made them look very golden, and I realized that they were Flickers. I had previously never seen any more than one at a time.
I found a pair of young Flickers on flickr, if anyone reading this wants a quick look-

(47,675 posts)We are regularly visited by five or six bluebirds at a time. A couple of days ago there was a falcon on the high-tension wires and a month or so ago one swooped in between our house and the neighbor's and no more than 10 feet over our heads (did a tight u-bee). There are generally a good supply of hawks, red tail and otherwise, and turkey vultures are everywhere. The binoculars come in handy.

(2,842 posts)It seems that March is best for Great Horned owls and Barred owls.
I really like to hear them.

(50,130 posts)We have a pair of bald eagles with one offspring this year. Lots of seagulls on the water. Canada geese up the yazoo. Great heron. Assorted other birds. But I will have to look into the possibility of owls.
