So I'm in a parking lot and this woman asks me if I can show her how to turn on the heater. It's 30 degrees out. She just ought it and the temporary license is on the back of the car. she can't figure how to get heat into the car.
"Sure, I can do that."
I spent about 10 minutes, pushing every button and combination of buttons and dials on the dashboard. Fuck if I could get any heat out of the vents.
Maybe it was a computer malfunction.

Think. Again.
(22,330 posts)...cost of production, or quality of the product, anymore.
Everything is priced strictly on "what the market will bear", even necessities such as basic food, shelter, and medical care.
It's just one of the reasons why capitalism is the wrong road for us to be traveling.

(7,080 posts)Rented a Ford something last summer in Milwaukee for 15 days. At the airport. There is a line of cars to pick from with keys inside. No employee anywhere. Chose the Ford because it had electric passenger seat. We cant even figure out how to START the damn thing. I get the book out and we are laughing so hard the tears in my eyes prevent me from reading. Husband finally spots a BUTTON to push-start the car. Then had to study the book. Was a trip.

(556 posts)First cold day, no heat. After about 5 minutes in electric mode, heat started coming but was tanking the range in electric mode. I took it out of e-mode and fired up the engine. Most cars I have owned would give heat in a minute or two, but this one gave zero heat until the engine was fully up to temperature.
There is absolutely no way that car would heat up idling in a parking lot on gasoline mode in less than 10 minutes.

(14,171 posts)I didn't think of that.
Still... she had it idling, trying to get heat for a few minutes. I spent at least 5 more minutes. There should have been some engine spin-off available by then?

Wonder Why
(5,679 posts)which occurs when you press the starter button. The engine only starts when necessary. And if you are just sitting in the parking lot, it may not be necessary for a while to run the engine as the only reasons to run it in a hybrid are to provide power to the wheels or recharge the battery. Does the battery need to be charged or car in drive? - start engine else, do nothing as it is not necessary.
Also, if heat is on auto, fan will be very low and you might not detect any heat as the car might have decided that until the engine is warm, there is no need to turn the fan up high and push cold air through the ducts so wait until it is warm enough before activating higher fan settings - that's what my hybrids do and neither is under 12 y/o.

(556 posts)I had the ability to get totally out of e-drive by toggling through options. Full ECO was all battery, the normal mode would kick the engine on with battery assist as default but turn it off when the car stopped, and go engine only in SAVE mode. The dash was instrument heavy complete with tach. Never a doubt when the engine was firing.

(36,890 posts)The rental car they gave him was an all electric Volvo. Hed never driven an electric car in his life. Good thing hes a young guy and into cars, because he figured it out himself. Apparently you open the car with the fob, get in it, depress the pedal, and go. No pressing buttons to start it or anything !

(36,631 posts)Heater control is a slider: empty thermometer with icycles on one end, full thermometer with wavy vertical lines on the other.
Fan control is a knob, 3 positions: blank, 4-blade fan with some wavy lines, 4-blade fan with lots of lines.
