(25,926 posts)our first apartment (it was a townhouse) had fire ants in the back yard. Needless to say, my very young son (he was 9months old when we first lived there) was never able to go into the back yard.

(24,102 posts)...in 1976-77, I had cockroaches and palmetto bugs.
One time, I was about to wipe away what I thought was a hair in my bathroom sink, right by the overflow drain.
Imagine my horror when I realized there were 2 "hairs" and they were moving - there was a palmetto bug in the overflow drain, and the "hairs" were its antennae poking out.
Gross, gross, gross.

(4,274 posts)and the bugs. My first time there I stayed in a motel and about 9:00 p.m. I spotted a lizard running along the wall. I freaked out and called the front desk. The guy told me "Don't kill it!! We have those around to keep the bugs down!!" Same thing when I vacationed in Puerto Rico. Sitting on my covered balcony drinking rum and coke with my obligatory Hawaiian shirt on laying on the chaise lounge. I looked away for a minute and when I looked back there was a lizard bigger than a rat sitting a couple of feet away and sunning himself. I thought "OK, we can share!!"

(10,289 posts)Truly Nolen, a South Florida pest control company, used to have a fleet of trucks made to look like giant bugs and vermin; sort of like the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, but much less appetizing. One truck was an immense cockroach (palmetto bug) with long flexible legs that would move up and down as it drove down the highway. As a kid those Truly Nolen trucks gave me nightmares.

(12,413 posts)You will have an occasional cockroach in your bathtub or skittering around the floor in a damp area. They either come up with the plumbing or come in from a paper kitchen bag. Although Ive always found that when I see them very occasionally, they are in the tub. Meaning they have come up from pipes.
On edit, I live on an island in the tropics.

(4,274 posts)up about how Marlin would speak so calmly as Jim is going into danger. I think there is even an old comedy bit centered around that premise of Jim getting ripped up while Marlin just rolls along.
